Ruined my life
Please don’t put yourself through what I went through. Dr Back did surgery on me from thoracic to lumbar to correct scoliosis. I now have broken hardware and permanent joint issues and arthrosis. I’ve been in the worst pain of my life for over 2 years now, because of the surgery that he failed. I would not recommend to anyone.

Top Notch Neurosurgeon
I have had a total of 10 spine surgeries. Dr Back is credited with over half of them. He is very competent, knowledgeable, and professional. I trust him with my life. He left his former practice mere days after my thoracic surgery. During the surgery, I did have a seizure. However, that seizure had nothing to do with Dr Back. Unfortunately, my insurance does not cover his new location. Otherwise, he would still be my Dr. Dr Back, thank you for all you have done for me, over the years. I wish I could have thanked you in person. Be blessed!!

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE
Dr. Back performed my FIL's back surgery in March 2024, due to a fall that fractured his L3 in several locations. Dr. Back did fusion surgery. The wound would never heal and all he would advise was to get more protein. He finally sent him to a wound care doctor who would only dress the wound week after week. In May 2024, my FIL ended up in severe pain and Dr. Back's recommendation was to take him to ER. The ER doctor discovered a severe infection around his spine. This infection required a second back surgery to remove the infection which tested positive for MRSA. The second surgeon advised us that all could have been prevented if they had taken care of the original wound. This one surgery has now caused my FIL to need 24-hour care. My FIL went from being completely dependent to needing care. I do not recommend Dr. Back.

I had cervical surgery with Dr back about three years ago and had terrible results, I was supposed to be in the hospital one day and wound up there for two weeks and two months rehab and voice therapy because he paralyzed my vocal cord. on my thirty day follow up he wanted to redo my surgery, NOOO! I have been in severe pain since I am now planning to have the surgery done by a new surgeon because my doctors have told me I could be paralyzed if I don't have it done, no I do not recommend Dr back!!

Never consult with Dr. Back
Dr. Back did not spend much time with me discussing my case. He suggested a repair of my first fusion which I do not remember why it was needed and that I had spinal stenosis which needed to be fixed. I wanted to question him right before the surgery but did not have a chance since he merely popped his head through the curtain said hello and then took off. When I woke up after the surgery I had the most horrific pain in my right leg. I asked the nurse what was going on and he said that they had to cut through a muscle. Dr. Back never once came to see me while I was in the hospital, instead he sent his PA's who could only say that the pain in my leg would heal. I had one appointment with Dr. Back after that who said the muscle would heal. It hasn't because Dr. Back cut through a nerve and the pain is horrific. And when he corrected the spinal stenosis, he neglected to correct the second one that was there. So I am having to go to a reputable spinal physician to see what can be done

Two minutes
For my appt with Dr Back he was in my room with me no more than 2 minutes. Said I needed two screws and a metal plate in my neck. I didn’t commit to this. Saw another neurosurgeon 6 weeks later.. he spent 15 minutes explaining why I did NOT need surgery. Dr Back left the practice two weeks after I saw him. The after visit summary said I had agreed to things that were never discussed.

Came in for checkup involvong my severe congenital scoliosis. Dr. Back ignored my previous doctor's diagnosis of congenital scoliosis (present from birth) and referred to my condition as idiopathic scoliosis (unknown cause), even after multiple corrections. He then tried to rush me into scheduling surgery, while going over exactly none of the risks, downplaying the recovery time, neglecting to mention it will not stop my back pain or that it might fail afterwards and leave me with a broken metal rod up my spine. After denying scheduling this surgery, they sent a nurse in specifically to schedule the surgery I said no to 20 minutes ago. I was also called unprompted for the same reason. All in all, I felt like I was not being listened to when I talked aboit my own body, and that I was being rushed through without my best interests in mind.

Dr. Adam Back is a true "godsend". He is absolutely the "best". He is at the top of the line as far as neurosurgeons go. He genuinely cares for, and about his patients. For a neurosurgeon, he is truly "down to earth", explains everything in detail yet in a language you can understand. He truly makes you feel comfortable. He is a "rare breed" in the field of neurosurgery. He, after seeing many, many other neurologists and neurosurgeons, was willing to take my case. I was "chin to chest", had severe kyphosis and severe scoliosis. My whole spine and spinal cord were in total disarray and in need of grave repair. He willingly took me on as a patient. I underwent a lengthy 10 to 12-hour surgery. He is truly a "leader" in his field. He is the number one neurosurgeon at Novant Presbyterian Health Medical Center, and the number one neurosurgeon in all of Charlotte...really in all of North Carolina. Kudos to Dr. Adam Back and his whole team!!!
