I consulted with several surgeons in the 4 years before finally making my decision. One (a very technically-skilled BHR specialist) lost my confidence because, while trying to sell me on Birmingham resurfacing, he failed to disclose that resurfacing is actually a much more invasive procedure than a minimally-invasive anterior THA and that resurfacing requires a longer and more painful recovery. The other surgeon I consulted still uses metal-on-metal hardware, whichconcerned me because of the metal ion allergy issue. Dr. Neuwirth earned my confidence in our first visit, both in the straightforwardness and thoroughness of his answers and because he uses the anterior approach and offers ceramic-on-polyurethane hardware and does not use metal-on-metal hardware. I have a very low pain tolerance (which was a big factor in my choice of procedure) but was up walking without pain a few hours after my total hip arthroscopy, and within a week, my gait was completely normal. I am a recent patient of Dr. Neuwirth, I had a knee surgery two weeks ago. He was very accommodating and made me feel comfortable during pre and post surgery. Now that I am in my recovery stage, he continues to provide great care and made sure all my questions are being answered to keep my piece of mind. Dr Neuwirth is by far the best surgeon anyone could ask for! He is a master surgeon but beyond that he is a genuinely caring and amazing person. I have found over the last 10-15 years that the “bed side manner” has been lost. It is NOT LOST with Dr Neuwirth. He will spend as much time as necessary with you; he will answer every question no matter how insignificant; he will answer your families questions. He gives you his cell phone number and can be reached at night and on the weekend. All in all he changed my world for the better. He will be doing my other Hip when it is time. Ultimately I’m not certain you can find a kinder person or a more caring and skilled doctor!!
