My elderly parent was admitted to the ER for 15 hours for medical management of a hypertension crisis requiring IV medications and monitoring as well as diagnosis to rule in/out other potential emergent medical concerns. My parent has dementia and cannot self advocate or self report well especially in an emergency. Her long term caregiver and CNA was with her. I hold medical proxy under my parents advanced directive for healthcare. The advance directive is in the electronic medical record and my parents medical history is up to date. Written electronic information regarding my parents medical concerns and symptoms as well as my full name, role and contact information was provided upon admission. My parent was treated for 15 hours in the ER. The discharging physician was Dr. chu-O’Conner. I made multiple, multiple attempts to contact the doctor for an update and to discuss the concerns and next steps. No communication has been reciprocated.Enough said beware.
