Probably a Very Good Surgeon
About four years ago, I had an 11-hour brain surgery, tumor resection of a 6cm meningioma. This takes two surgeons, on the report they are Dr. Carlson, and Dr. Lewis. I met with Dr. Lewis several times before and after the surgery, who answered questions and explained the procedure and followup, allowing me to make confident decisions. Unfortunately Dr. Lewis left UNMH, and for the past 4 years, Dr. Carlson has been my doctor. I have not been able to speak to him during that time, even during scheduled appointments, I've never met him. There has never been an explanation, I meet or speak to people who say they are assistants, who then schedule the next appointment. My last appointment was today, and I've decided it is going to be my last appointment at UNMH. If necessary I'd like to speak to my doctor about the pathology report, which was unusual and added later by Dr. Lewis, and about the length of time between follow-up visits, which can't be scheduled that far in advance.

Low Quality Care
Only for emergency use. All his training took place at UNM. Not careful enough for surgery with my brain. Arrogant would not visit me in hospital post op. Would like someone better rounded in his training for surgery. Hospital was sloppy post op. Wish I went somewhere else.

Excellent surgical skill. No infections and small incisions which healed quickly. Saved my vision. Aftercare not so great would not see me before I was put under and would not come see me in the NS icu despite my numerous requests. Puts other info in my chart that is not my info, so no the greatest listener. I think he could learn from his patients if he listened a little bit. Better research would come if he just listened to his patients rather than referring to stats. Would use again.

Love this man, He has save the sight/life of my son. Has not given up on his issues. Very knowledgeable. Does his research, before any surgeries are performed. Also gives the patient and or their families all info so they can do their own research. Also will sit down with all involved and answer any and all questions. He is so willing to work with the patients and their families for the best outcome. GREAT Man and Doctor!!!
