Caveat emptor. Six months after a routine physical from Dr. Joseph, I received a bill from UPMC for $127. There was no explanation. I called to inquire about the charge. A customer service rep said I asked the doctor about a skin rash. She said that any question I asked raised the visit from a routine visit to a Code 5, whatever that means.I told her I didn’t recall asking about a rash, but even if I did, the doctor did NOTHING to treat it. He prescribed no ointment or medication, and he made no specialist referral. In other words, he rendered NO treatment. The customer service rep said it made no difference; simply asking a question made it something more than a routine visit. If I’m going to be overcharged for asking a Simone question which was so trivial I don’t even remember asking it, I’m getting a new PCP. How can I trust him to discuss my health?
