Extremely Disappointing Experience
I went to Ben Stein after suffering from over 3 months of foot pain limiting me to only walking. He took an x-ray and then came into the office to provide his diagnosis of tendonitis. He ordered me to continue resting for another 6-8 weeks and do PT. I asked how he could be sure that it was not a stress fracture (since they sometimes never show on x-rays) or the result of a chronic issue with my ankle (since I had sprained it badly over a decade ago) without an MRI. His response was that there was 'zero reason for an MRI' and left the room. I then sent him an email asking him again to send me for comprehensive imaging so that we can be sure on the right approach. He did not reply. In short, I'd recommend Ben Stein to no one. It's one thing to be wrong/misguided with good intentions. It's another to be condescending and arrogant. I spoke to other Orthopedic surgeons afterwards, they were shocked. Several acknowledged the need for a MRI and asked me to come in for second opinion.

This was my 2nd foot surgery with Dr Stein. He is far and above one of the best surgeons I have ever dealt with. He quickly diagnosed the problems on each foot, one of which was misdiagnosed and the other with previous surgery performed badly. He explained the options for surgical or non-surgical treatment and expected outcome for these options. He also went into a lot of detail about post-op recovery and rehab, something I have not experienced from other surgeons. The office staff, schedulers, and assistants are first-rate. This surgery was done at the new Capital Orthopedic Surgical Center in Germantown. Nursing, Anesthesia, assistants, and strict Covid precautions made for an excellent experience.

I was in need a "great" foot & ankle specialist following a botched procedure by another physician. Dr. Stein was recommended to me by another Orthopedic Surgeon who did not specialize in the foot & ankle. From my 1st appointment with Dr. Stein this May 2020 I knew right away he was the right choice. He listened, he examined, and he truly expressed his desire to help me. My Achilles Tendon needed to be fully reconstructed. Dr. Stein assured me he would do everything he could to repair the damage and get me back walking normally and without pain. The procedure turned out to be more complicated than either he or I thought. However, Dr. Stein is a "rock star" when it comes it the foot & ankle! His entire surgical & office team is wonderful. My surgery was in August 2020, and while the recovery period has been very long I am now up & walking normally, wearing regular shoes, and almost pain-free. All thanks to Dr. Benjamin Stein. I cannot say enough good things about this man.

Dr. Stein was able to see me quickly and he and his staff were able to do the complete exam and followup on the spot. I had my hand x-rayed, examined and put in a splint in about two hours. He explained my exact break clearly and provided instructions for care at home. I'm grateful for his prompt and competent care.

I am very grateful for the excellent job Dr. Stein did on my ankle. His physical therapy staff really helped speed up my recovery. I am really happy his office is open and functioning safely during this pandemic.

Dr. Stein is a phenomenal doctor. He has a fantastic bedside manner, is super knowledgeable and truly cares about his patients. He did a wonderful job on my Achilles tendon repair and has kept a close eye on me throughout my recovery. He makes himself accessible by phone or email which was so comforting when I went through a difficult spell with my scar. I cannot recommend him highly enough. You will be in very caring hands.

I was very comfortable and satisfied with the results of Dr. Stein performing my Achilles Tendon debridement, elongation and repair. I visited him initially for a second opinion but his surgery plan was more aggressive than my original surgeon and his rational for his plan made a lot of sense. He packs a lot of information into relatively short appointments, but I felt like he was always willing to answer any questions I had. During my recovery, he and his PA were readily available to help when I had pain or other questions. His office can be difficult to book an appointment at first, especially over the phone. But once I was in the system and booking follow-ups in person, I never had another issue. I'd absolutely recommend Dr. Stein and would return to him for future procedures.

I highly recommend Dr. Stein. My orthopedist referred me to Dr. Stein when it became clear that the surgery I required on my foot and ankle was too specialized. Dr. Stein. Dr. Stein was very energetic and explained everything to me. He answered all of my questions and graciously slowed down when I asked him to! His staff was great and returned my calls timely when I had questions after the fact. Dr. Stein gave me realistic expectations and still achieved the goal of getting me back to all of the physical activities in which I engage. I would definitely recommend Dr. Stein, and am grateful for the work he performed.

I highly recommend Dr. Stein. He takes a measured approach and is very good at answering all questions. His surgery on my left knee to repair a torn meniscus has been a complete success, and I wouldn’t think of going to anyone else for orthopedic problems.

I needed very extensive reconstructive surgery from decades of long-distance running, and Dr. Stein took the time to re-explain everything to to me and my partner when I requested it. (The first time he explained it I was so distraught I heard very little!) He was also very responsive with all of my follow-up issues and questions. I have already recommended him to other people in the DC area.

I cannot thank Dr. Stein enough for his amazing talents and getting me back on my feet (literally). I tore my achilles tendon in June and the next day Dr. Stein squeezed me into his schedule the day before his vacation and I had surgery two weeks later. The whole process from the surgery, recovery, follow ups, and physical therapy has been a pain-free and stress-free experience. I high recommend Dr. Stein and his amazing team for any of your medical needs.

Dr. Stein has been great to me and I highly recommend him. I injured my ankle when I fell down stairs at work. My PCP recommended him and his office got me on the schedule the next day. He answers all my questions and is straightforward & honest about what to expect, especially as I age with this injury. I wish I didn't have to have surgery, but I am so thankful that he was my surgeon and got me on the road to recovery. Sometimes there can be a wait during follow-up visits, but that is to be expected when you have a doctor that listens to you and addresses your concerns.

I felt blessed from beginning of my accident (broken tibia & fibula @ ankle; mended w/ 3 plates, 12 screws) to today, & I will continue to live a full life thanks to Dr. Stein. I live elsewhere (A. A. Co.) from accident site, so again, blessed that accident happened in Dr. S's "territory" & he was on-call (Sibley)! Dr. S & staff took meticulous care of me throughout recovery. FOLLOW his Rx & don't put at risk his surgical work. Ask your questions, do as told, & fully rejoin your life's activities at the proper time.

Broke my ankle in 3 places while out the country. Came home and couldn’t get an appt with any of the orthopedic surgeons at GW. My pcp recommended Dr Stein. He was able to get me in within a few days. He performed 2 surgeries on my ankle, and before and after each appt in between, he was incredibly responsive to my emails or calls. The office is always full of people waiting so that can affect his timeliness but he is very professional, thorough, engaged and incredibly friendly when he is seeing/treating you. Prayerfully no more broken bones. But if ever, definitely going back to him. I’ve also recommended him to friends and he’s treated them very well.
