I was quite a long term patient of Dr. Bendok who suffers with 2 serious neurological diseases. He was nice, and I thought knowledgeable. However, he would always tell me, and my family, that there was nothing that could be done for me, to get my affairs in order and to"do what makes you happy". I accepted my fate. Then came my yearly checkup and Dr. Bendok had switched hospitals (states) so I had to find a new neurosurgeon. Thank God I had to do this because the next doctor said there was indeed surgery for me and now, 10 years later, I am still around.

Dr. Bendok is an excellent physician and surgeon. When I was diagnosed with a cyst on my brain, suddenly I lost everything. I am a professor at a large university, and suddenly my classes and students were taken away and I was admitted to ICU. I came to Mayo from work for routine tests but the last test was a MRI. I met Dr. Kristna first when I was in the ER and Dr. Bendok while I was in ICU. Although my world seemed to be ending Dr. Bendok gave me hope. Dr. Bendok and Dr. Kristna performed the surgery and I was discharged the next day. I had no complications and I continue to see Dr. Bendok today, 6 years later. I recommend him not only because of his expert skills as a neurosurgeon, but also how he interacts with his patients with compassion and encouragement. He has an excellent team and they work together to manage the care of his patients to obtain positive health outcomes. Yes I am still here teaching 6 years later. I am so grateful that he was instrumental in saving my life.

I would absolutely recommend Dr Bendok & team performed an embolization and right frontal craniotomy for microsurgical resection of complex arteriovenous malformation. I could not ask for a better team of doctors and nurses. Extremely professional, unbeleivable bedside manners and was able to explain everything so that i understood what my diagnoses and treatment plans were.

Dr. Bendok is an incredibly gifted surgeon and kind man. He saved my life. A few months ago they found an AVM in my head and I had to get it removed or it would have killed me. Dr. Bendok and his staff got me in right away and were kind, supportive and extremely helpful throughout the entire process. He made me feel safe and comforted going in to a tricky surgeon. He completely removed my AVM and saved my life. It was a privilege having him be my doctor.

I am a very unique case as I have been told by many. Dr. Bendok went above and beyond to help figure out what is going on, after many test and some trial treatments things are looking up although I will not get my sight back not due to anything he could fix. I figure at some time I will be seeing him again and I will be glad it is him at the other end of my repairs. Thank you He is your man to see if no one else can fix you. Dr Mithun also assisted and is a great guy.

Dr. Bendok and Dr. Zimmerman at Mayo Clinic saved my life and clipped my aneurysm just in time before it ruptured. I am on day 7 of recovery, and I am so grateful to them for the extra thought and care they put into deciding how to go about the surgery. They got me in right away and did open brain surgery. I'm 45 & feel blessed to be alive and well and pray I never get anything like this again. The Mayo clinic is filled with wonderful doctors & nurses & they took great care of me-Thank You!!

care philosophy

Conveying the message that I care is probably the most important thing. I'm trying to understand, who is this person as a human being, what makes them happy, what makes them human, and how can I protect that, how can I potentially enhance that.

biography

When it came to choosing a career, for me there was nothing like brain surgery. And for me to be able to use my mental skills, my manual skills, my techniques, and also my compassion and empathy, bring that all together in one package, that's really what drew me to the field initially and what sustained my career thus far.
