In my first visit with Dr. Alicea, I came with the intention of filling a lithium prescription for Bipolar I. Instead, I was forced to relive all the worst moments of my life, including but not limited to how many times, and by what methods I had tried to take my life. After this, and much more prodding about any possible trauma I could think of, he claimed that he was "not fully convinced" I was bipolar, as I had not hallucinated nor had delusions of superpowers during manic episodes. These symptoms are not recognized by the DSM 5 as symptoms of Bipolar Disorder, rather of schizophrenia. After saying he would fill my prescription, he refused absolutely to fill a 90 day prescription, due to anecdotal evidence that people with bipolar disorder may wash pills, and cannot be trusted with impulse control. This experience was insulting, dehumanizing, and incredibly unprofessional.
