I was very saddened when I received a letter from Dr Haws announcing his retirement. My wife passed away on March 12, 2018. I went to my scheduled yearly checkup with him on December 4, 2018. I told him that my wife had passed away in March. He looked a little shocked, then expressed his deepest sympathy. He was somewhat emotional as he expressed his condolences. I felt his genuine compassion and grief for my loss. In addition, Dr Haws has always been very professional, a great listener, and has always given me some very practical and sound advice to help me monitor and take better care of my cardiovascular health. He never prescribed any unnecessary medications and was very much aware of possible interactions between my prescriptions. He will be greatly missed. He is a five star doctor. Please pass this note along to him, and wish him a happy retirement for me. A most grateful patient, Lee Manwill.

Dr. Haws prescribed a new medication to my mom. We asked what the Number Need to Treat (NNT) was. He said "it's not important" because it's "been in use so long." NNT and NNH (Number Needed to Harm) ARE important. It's also important because the patient asked. It's their body the med is going in. Answering medical questions is part of informed consent. It's OK that he didn't know off the top of his head, but look it up. Otherwise, he was fine from what I could tell in one short appointment.
