Dr. Smythies was very nice and reviewed the MRI with us describing what we were looking at. He made some quick checks of her reflexes and said she didn't need surgery. It was refreshing to have a doctor be so matter of fact.

Rude, dismissive and careless.
This doctor is arrogant, rude, and dismissive. I was referred to him by my PCP so that he could go over my brain MRI as well as a full spinal MRI. My body went through extreme trauma in 2021 with septic shock/coma/2 month hospital stay, and now I have cognitive deficiencies, as well as moderate to severe disc degeneration disease along with scoliosis, & osteoarthritis that have been documented and I have had for years. My pain is severe to the point where I have tremors and can barely walk at night. I explained my pain, as well as my physical disabilities and challenges, & he stated my pain does not match what he sees on the MRI's. He dismissed the radiologist's assessment/findings and told me he could refer me to physical therapy. He also stated that he is a neurosurgeon and works with knives only, and I need to see a neurologist. He said everything looks normal. Basically dismissed me, my pain, and other professionals within the healthcare industry. Beware!

Worst person on this planet
Dr Symthies is truly the worst person that I have ever come across. He is so careless and rude. He claims he cares about patients but I walked out of there so hopeless and never felt so mistreated. He didn’t even care to hear about anything I had to say regarding my symptoms and seemed like I was annoying him trying to explain what has been going on. it is no question why you can get into see him so fast, but I would rather wait months to go see someone else other than this useless neurosurgeon. Truly the worst experience I have ever had.

Poor bedside manner
I seen this provider within the year for a consult. His mannerism were cold and uncaring. He proceeded to gaslight me and say well everybody has this if you look at their scan. He gave me a pt referral and sent me out the door. I have disc buldging and a fissure and at the age of 29 this visit was extreamly discouraging and not helpful. He did not provide me with education about the fissure or buldging just the response of "everyone has this issue" I felt he did not validate me and my pain and I would not recommend nor return to this provider again. He really should consider working on communication/ people skills.

Uncaring rude
I have never seen a doctor so uncaring and rude. My teen daughter was referred he even said why are you here? Did not bother to look at scans or medical history of two brain tumors, chiari, and multiple shunt revisions and infections. Would not even look at scans of multiple spinal tumors. Would not acknowledge daughters pain. She left saying I want to die now. I have never seen a more heartless doctor.

Awful so-called doctor
I went to this neurologist, because my primary care sent me there. I had MRIs done. I have severe nerve impingement in my neck and shoulders. He refused to even acknowledge that I was in pain won’t recommend for surgery won’t recommend for physical therapy won’t give me anything for pain, so I’m too young to have the steroid injections that my primary care wants me to get totally dismiss me without treating me even like a human. I find him to be rude, arrogant, incredibly dismissive. I was not even in the office 10 minutes and he wants to charge me for an hour plus! I would not recommend him I am seeking second opinions with a real neurologist!

Spinal Tumor Surgery
Dr. Smythies and his staff put in a lot of effort to get him into surgery quickly, especially with complicated insurance scenario. Surgery was successful with all lower extremity numbness gone immediately and Dr. Smithies went way out of his way to find me with the results.

Dr Smythies is an outstanding surgeon who saved my life! He has excellent bedside manner and showed a great deal of compassion. He was extremely informative before, during and after the surgery which helped put me at ease. I highly recommend him.

Do not recommend
I went there after my PCP referred me and my problems weren’t dealt with. He basically came in took one look at me and I felt like I was judged. I was told by my PCP that my MRIs for my lumbar and cervical came back stating I have congenital spinal stenosis and I had a nerve test done that the Dr I saw for it said I have a pinched nerve on my left c7 and Dr Smythies came in ignored what my other Drs said and claimed surgery isn’t the answer that losing weight is and then when I told him I can’t because I’m in so much pain he interrupted me and said well then have you thought of bariatric surgery which I said yes then he went on saying rudely and arrogantly that I should get that done and it will improve my health but at no point through the 5-10 mins I actually saw him did he do anything but talk to me about only losing weight and telling me that the MRIs were ok. It’s all lies he told me and I’m seeking a second opinion because he has no shame, arrogant and a liar. DON’T RECOMMEND!!!!

He was condescending and rude! Zero stars
He didn’t even bother to look at my xrays, had absolutely NO idea why I was there, wasted my entire afternoon and bridge toll. Why is this guy even practicing? He did absolutely no exam other than a quick strength test on my toes on his way out the door. So my visit was a complete waste of my time.

I was requisitioned by my pain specialist to address severe, ongoing issues due to spinal injuries. This,' Dr." Simply asked me what I was doing there. Pretty much the whole content of my visit. Very sad,as I'm seeking help and had a negative experience. Any recommendation for a Neuro surgeon,I would gladly entertain. Ty.

we were referred to Dr Smythies by a friend in the medical field. During the visit, it was like he was barely in the room, and not really paying much attention. He reviewed reports obtained from tests already performed and asked a few questions, but at no time did he do any type of neurologic or strength testing. He didn't ask me to do anything other than tell me what was going on. I never got on the exam table, yet when his report came to my referring physician, he mentioned results from his exam. How can that be, when he never touched me....I call that fraudulent, and obviously I left with no answers.

This guy saved my life. I have chiari malformation and he did a beautiful surgery on me and I'm back to living. He obviously does a great job so it doesnt make me worry about his bedsides manners because he knows what he is doing. I'm so thankful for him and his staff and everyone involved in my surgery. I was so scared before i went in and it made me feel so much better when he said he wasn't scared. I highly recommend him and trust him.

Referred to him by my primary care doctor. Dr. Smythies was rude and arrogant and after telling me he was a brain surgeon and wasn't interested in my neurological symptoms he left the exam room without speaking and never returned leaving me to find my own way out to the front. I asked the receptionist if the appointment was over and she told me she would go ask him and said she had never spoke with him before this. She came back out to tell me that he was done. She also suggested another neurologist that she said was nice. I wouldn't refer anyone to him. Waste of my time and money.

Long awaited appt, only to receive a SUPER ODD encounter. Dr Smythies entered room in a horribly short mood to spend 5 minutes w/me. My being very concerned, scared and emotional about my condition (spine brain electric jolts to head and eyes upon certain movements) and this man showed absolutely ZERO concern, bedside manner, patience, nor communication skills. I voiced my bewilderment to his staff, so he just chose not to do a follow-up appt on his ordered MRI - I NOW HAVE NEURO EMERGENCY!
