Very poor surgeon
Makes promises but doesn't deliver. Ruined life forever with his knife hitting spinal cord. Should have chosen someone else, but listened to his bragging about how good he is. Honest talk....if you wanna be crippled after a spinal surgery...then he's your man.

THE 'BEST YET'
If you have Spine issues, Scoliosis, Degenerative Disk Disease or Sciatic issues Neurosurgery at UVA and specifically Dr. Yen is who I would definitely recommend. I have had (3) back surgeries at UVA. The first (2) were performed by the Orthopedic Department and the last by Dr. Yen and Neurosurgery. I have everything listed above but this last surgery straightened out my Spine, I couldn't have asked for a better surgeon.

The PA did the most during my visit. He could not advise me on any relief to be had with the pains, and discomforts since siurgery. However, he did explain something no one else has done in the last 2 1/2 years. He described how un-tomed muscles could affect the bursa, thus causing it to be inflamed. He showed me some exercises and directed me to look on uTube for more. I wish I had been told this long ago. So I'm starting on a new plan.

The doctor ordered more MRI's and a CT scan, they would not make a follow up appointment, even after I had scheduled the MRI/CT scan appointment

I had a spinal fusion as a teenager (with another provider) and was continuing to have complications and made an appointment with Dr. Yen at UVA after a referral from my pain management specialist. I went through all the imaging he ordered and had a follow-up visit. Throughout the appointment, he only spoke to my husband and would not make eye contact with me, the patient. He said I was a candidate for another fusion, but he wasn't sure if there would be enough room on my spine, so he would review my imaging and schedule another visit. This was in December 2023. I called his office in February 2024 to follow-up after I hadn't heard anything, and the office told me he was working on a simulation to see if a fusion was feasible. It is now nearly June, and I have never been called. There has been no follow-up from his office and nothing entered in MyChart since the phone call I initiated in February. This was a huge investment in time and money for absolutely zero communication.
