Dr. Damian Portela, MD

This guy is bad even by the low standards Americans are used to. Incompetent, ideological, uncaring, untrusting and untrustworthy. I wouldn't hire this guy to clean my toilets. The only good thing that came out of dealing with this guy for a few months is that it motivated me to hire a concierge doctor on retainer. What a difference it makes, a doctor that actually works for the wellbeing of the patient rather than the bottom line of an insurance company. If you want to be misdiagnosed, mistreated, and made to run in circles aimlessly, this is your guy.

After weeks waiting for an appointment, my husband had an appointment for his vasectomy with Dr. Portela. But two days before, they called and said he'd be out of the office so we had to reschedule for the next week. Okay, fine. But then two days before THAT appointment, we were told he'd be out of the office AGAIN and we'd need to reschedule for 2 weeks later. It is very difficult to take off of work for my husband and we no longer trust this doctor. How do we know if we accept that new appointment, that the same thing won't just keep happening where 2 days before they tell us the Dr. is unavailable?! Heck no. We aren't playing that game. We are officially going elsewhere for the procedure and we are livid that this Dr. and his office has made us waste weeks of our life where my husband would have had his procedure by now. Now I understand why this doctor has so many bad reviews. GO ELSEWHERE and save yourself the headache!!!

I have never met a more unprofessional and uncaring excuse for a doctor in my life. Fifty minutes after arriving for an appointment front desk staff said his whereabouts were unknown and there was no ability to contact him. I questioned how it could be possible that a doctor with a 2:00 PM appointment was MIA nearly an hour later but no one had an answer. Just then, Dr. Portela walked in and his response was “I don’t have to tell you or anyone where I am or what I’m doing “. I let him know that professionalism and common courtesy are not his strong suit and that a caring doctor would advise his staff to notify a patient if running late. As he shrugged his shoulders in disregard, I realized that this is not the office that I would choose for any procedure for my 80 year old mother who was the patient in this case, for myself or for my worst enemy. I’m confident we’ll find better care elsewhere since the bar has been set so low.

Was referred to dr Portela due to positive FISH test (bladder cancer.) Broke my COVID quarantine because, well, cancer. To start, office was filthy. The tile floors in staff area were 100 shades lighter where chair legs had scraped off the dirt. No clean pens. Papers, insurance cards, etc. passed around to staffers then to me without cleaning... and no one used Purell. Urine sample had no cover, no sterile container, no place to go. They wanted to do pelvic exam and cytoscopy despite my just having had these procedures. Doc wanted me to come back every few months for four years for $4-5,000 procedures each time. He used the ‘cancer fear’ threat... citing examples where people ignored his advice and died. I had to press for a phone call to get results of his FISH test. He said that it was negative and I didn’t need treatment. Then, I had to call three times to get a written copy of the test results — which were actually positive!!! I’ll get treated, but never, ever by this dr.

While Dr. Portela May run late on occasion, to me it is because he takes a great deal of time & care explaining and discussing things to the patient. Yes, they have a busy, successful practice and I don’t like to wait either. But, in this case, “the juice is worth the squeeze “. He performed a TURP and I am happy with the results and care provided

Timely well informed visit with Dr Portela.Kind and understanding took his time to explain the surgical procedure.Office staff were warm and welcoming.Very positive experience will the whole team.

After booking my appointment over the phone for the specific purpose of getting a letter written, three weeks later and I still don't have a letter. When arriving to the office I had to wait 30 minutes to be seen. Dr. Portela said he needed to run some tests on me and that he would write everything down and he would have his assistant write up the letter I needed. Three weeks later and I’m told he will not write letter.

Accurate diagnostic always. Treatment to the point. Communicative, explains clearly. High human quality. In clinic or hospital he knows what he is doing. His team of nurses and staff, great people too

I was suffering of an enlarged prostate for about 4 to 5 years and someone has refered me to Dr Portela. I was getting up at night 5 to 6 times to urinate with lots of pain and sometimes could not even urinate and has to use a catheter .Dr. Portela was very confident that I will get better. After trying Flomax 5 , 10mg, Rapaflo, and still was not helping. Dr. Portela suggested that I do the surgery and I feel great today only 5 weeks after the surgery I sleep like a baby at night. Thankyou!

I just referred a friend. Most efficient office I’ve been to in a long time. Found my problem immediately which is amazing since my other dr had been treating me for the wrong problem for months!

Horrible office mgmt./staff. Scheduled to see Dr. Portela 10 days in advance, got the 'bait and switch' after waiting 40 minutes. They tried to pass me off on a PA, failing to say Dr. Portela never even came in for his appointments! Then they say he had an 'emergency'. Yeah, sure. Why no phone call to reschedule patients then? I took back my intake info and they asked, Do you want to cancel your appointment? I laughed and said, Dr. Portela failed the appointment, not me! Unprofessional.

Doctor Portela truly saved my life! He is caring & supportive. I was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer 3 years ago, he was completely invested in my surgery, prognosis & continued follow up care. He gives 100% of himself in caring for his patients. He shows empathy & outstanding knowledge in his field. His bedside manner & ability to communicate medical information to his patients is above any doctor I have come in contact with. He made a very scary diagnosis into a wonderful outcome!!!!
