He might be talented but he is in and out of the room so quick you have no idea what he even said. 3 meetings and maybe the last one lasted a minute or two. First one 30 seconds ! Give your patients some of your time!

Absolutely no empathy.
First visit he said, 'Your prostate is huge,' prescribed a pill and bolted from the room. Second visit, I was expecting to be scheduled for a procedure like T.U.R.P. based on an MRI. He came in to the room, said, 'You have prostate cancer, bladder cancer and pelvic cancer' said he would make the next appointment and bolted from the room before I could ask a single question. I was shuffled between three locations for four appointments, not too easy for an 84 year old driving from Prescott. Staff and, especially Mika Watanabe were fine. Don't see this doctor.

DO NOT GO TO THIS DR.!!!!!!
Do not choose this Dr. for ANYTHING!! I had 3 appointments and he spoke WITH me about 10 minutes. This did not include the pre-surgical visit .. that was with a PA and not even him. I have spoken with him for about 8 minutes in total. That includes surgery and 2 other office visits (the 3rd was with a PA). My 1st appointment was 5 minutes including checking my prostate. My 2nd was with a PA pre-op and she was very good. My 3rd was the lithotripsy (surgery) and I spoke with him about 2 minutes. I had not seen him so I didn't even recognize him when he walked up to my bed. I received more information about the procedure from the anastesioligst than from my Dr. My 4th visit was about 1 minute, this was post-op. No information, as usual. He told me it didn't work and out the door!I am switching doctors because I have NO information about how we take care of the stone that is still there!!! Due to his horrendous bedside manner and void of information I am switching in the middle!!!!!!!!

Sorry, poor experiences
In my 93+ weeks of nightmare pelvic pain, I started with Dr. Kaplan, and unfortunately similar to others, lack of empathy and listening skills resulted in me seeking care elsewhere, including 9 other Urologists.

Worst dr I have ever been to. Not kind or supportive, absolutely no empathy or compassion. Treats patieints like a number, cattle. Herds you in and out not caring about your concerns. Rude dismissive office staff. Belittles and demeans you when trying to discuss a concern with staffThey could care less about helping you. Do NOT use this dr. run run run the other way!!!!

Implants
Dr. Kaplin and staff have taken care of me with comprehensive visits for ED. I have tried the pump, which I had previously from my last doc. Dr. K. has treated me for ED. I tried the Shockwave method. Instead of buying their brand package (2500.00) I bought my own for 850.00 and the results have been disappointing after using it for a year. I'm now contemplating having a IPP. Any insight from others is always appreciated.

AVOID
Kaplan completed my radical prostatectomy and cut my rectum during the procedure which led to a surgeon having to repair that damage. That rectum damage led to a week in the hospital, emotional distress, a loss of 30 pounds and additional medical costs. The trauma to my rectum also led to a fistula (opening between the rectum and bladder) which required another surgery, additional costs, more emotional distress and additional recovery time. He also indicated that he was able to successfully complete nerve sparing during my procedure, but that was a lie. Seek medical help from ANY other urologist.

Avoid at all cost!
Horrible experience...was taking out ureteral stents like he worked in an assembly line. Just yanked them out with no consideration of you being in pain. Then when asked what to take for pain he said you won't have any but if you do just take over the counter meds... no instructions given for complication what so ever. Few hours later I ended up in emergency room because pain was so bad and could not pass urine. At hospital found out I had complicated UTI and had to have stent put on outside my body because the infection internally was so bad new urologist could not get ureteral stents in. His office did not even bother calling to see how I was and never sent the results of my urine test which if done earlier my UTI could have managed and I possibly could have avoided all this pain and suffering. Some "doctor's" just are in it for the $. Find a real doctor who actually cares about his patients and reputation because this obviously does NOT.

I have stone in one kidney and 3 stones and tumor in my other kidney I had Shock wave lithotripsy done with Dr Kaplan with no success so had a second procedure done Ureteroscopy to physically remove the stone and Dr Kaplan put a stent in to pevent damage from the broken up stone from damaging my insides as it travels out well no one told me I would be 100% Incontinent with the stent inside me or I would of purchased something on my way home plus I wasn't fully out of my Anestesia when the nurse dressed me after surgery and pushed me out the door as I was throwing up in a bag. I haven't been told details of either surgery of details of the before and after care. 2 days after surgery my stent came half way out it was a Saturday night so I removed it myself tried to get another appointment with Dr Kaplan and couldn't for 2 weeks because he will be in surgery or at another office location now remember how dangerous it is to go without a stent and couldn't see me for 2 weeks????

On 03/02/2021, I had a cystoscopy scheduled with David J. Kaplan, MD at the Academy Urology & Urogynecology of Arizona. The issue I have with Dr. Kaplan is how he talked to me. I did not understand all of the language he was using. First time I went, he attempted the procedure without any anesthesia and I almost jumped through the roof. That is why the procedure rescheduled. He was attempting the procedure the first time without a CT scan, so I didn't understand why he could not do the procedure this time without a CT scan. Dr. Kaplan’s verbiage, tone and voice decibel was so unprofessional and degrading. I have never had a doctor yell at me to the point of a screaming match that could be heard all over the whole office. As a doctor, he should have explained why the CT scan was needed in order to move forward with the procedure. His office staff also appeared to be equally appalled. The staff and patients in lobby were silent. I will never recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Kaplan may be competent in some areas of his practice; however, he performed IPP surgery on me in August which turned out to be a total disaster. I had to find another urologist to correct a totally botched surgery.

He seems to not care too much about you. Treats you just like money going into his bank account. I had a lithotripsy planned in the hospital at a certain time in the morning and we showed up when we were supposed to. When we arrive, he proceeds to raise his voice at my mom and I about how his assistant "called us" and we were supposed to be there hours earlier. For one, no one ever called us so he should blame his assistant. For two, how does he think that is okay that we had an agreed upon time and he thinks it's then okay to move it at his leisure. Look for another urologist. Don't go to Dr. Kaplan. This guy will rush your appointment and demand you go see him often just to get more $$$$

Dr. Kaplan came highly recommended. On my first visit his physician assistant wanted to do the prostate exam in the prison position. For 15 years I have laid on my side. For the cystoscopy. I was neatly draped by his female medical assistant. He did the cystoscopy without inserting any lidocaine jell first. The pain was excruciating. When he was about finished he told his assistant to instill some saline into the apparatus. I thought I would go through the roof. For the biopsy he inserts a probe in my rectum and gives me an injection. Twelve snaps of the hollow needles and his was finished. It was not painful, but uncomfortable. The anesthesia kicked in on my way to the car. For the Urolift. I was fully naked in the lithotomy position, un-draped and knocked out. "Move your scrotum over the edge," was the last thing I heard. In recovery rude nurses were wanting me to go pee. She tried to place a catheter in me but I screamed bloody murder. My little fellow roughed up a bit.
