Highly recommend!
I first saw him when he had an office in NC. I saw him after seeing multiple doctors over 10 years with no answers and being told it was nothing. First visit with him he was incredibly thorough, and asked questions I had never been asked. After asking about the most concerning symptoms and how long I had been having them, he then started to ask if I also had this symptom or that symptom, nailing them all and even pointing out things I was aware were symptoms to be considered. He stated that he knew what it was (2 conditions in fact) and ordered all the tests to confirm. Upon receiving the results, he called me himself and spent an hour explaining the results and what I had. My family and I could finally take a breath. He is worth the 2.5 hour drive from NC. Most brilliant and compassionate physician. He's so brilliant it can be confusing to some but trust me, you are in good hands.

For the first time, I have a Physician who understands me more than we have had time to cover, and I’m on the right path. Interactions are brief, however, he asks pertinent questions that are often not because it relates to rare conditions that are not as common. Dr. Schmechel is a specialist within a specialty; more than a general neurologist (not to discount others). The fields of neurology and genetics are the most complex out of all medical specialties, with much research still in development. His atypical questions stimulate reflection, allowing me answers which I would have never found on my own; taking almost half the average lifespan to discover. Dr. S is a rare gem who has likely dedicated much of his life to his work & patients. With that said, he’s not the most appropriate neurologist for everyone, and that’s okay. If you do find yourself under his care, be humble, patient, and trust his process. I feel that he truly cares about your short & long-term well-being. K

I have been seeing Dr. Schmechel since 2009. I have long list of autoimmune party goers and he always takes the time to listen and help in every way possible. Even asking about my husband who has a bad heart condition. He not only treats you but your family too. I drive 3 and a half hours to see him. The drive and office wait is worth it.

He was wonderful when he first opened his practice here. I saw him his first day. As time went on he was in the office fewer days 5 days a week now maybe 3 days if you're lucky. It takes forever to get a appointment. If you're in trouble and call forget having the phone answered by a person. Sure leave a message but 2 1/2 weeks for a return phone call. Only to be told they only do routine care for nuero problems?! They're too busy! Prescription refills- good luck! I moved to Duke.

My very first appt I waited 1 hour & 45 mins before I ever saw Dr. Schmechel. I understand I may have to wait a while in a doctor's office - but that long?!? Of course I was annoyed. The first thing he said to me when he came in was "Wow, someone has no patience today". Whatever. They told me to call back to schedule an MRI before my scheduled EEG. Well guess what. After a month of calling 6 voicemais, I still haven't been called back about an MRI. Finding a new DR today! Don't waste your time.

You expect a doctor that has 26 vials of blood taken from you to have something to say to you, sick, bedridden, in pain, days reversed sleeping days & awake nights, plagued my daily migraines, breathing problems in humid, rainy days. Dr. Schmechel does nothing! Test says patient has thick blood but refuses to help. No Migraine meds. 3 months, 3 visits, nothing but high fees. Unbelievable. Not surprising though if you read last years State News paper article about the law suit about Lex Med Ctr

I WOULD NOT recommend this office. My insurance was billed (refused) for a test not authorized or done. The test was not even the reason for visit. Very slow about sending notes to my primary care doctor. Now when I attempted to call about appointment all I got was voice mail. Had to call office manager to get any response. Won't go back, will find new doctor.
