After being referred by another physician at his hospital for a clinical trial that we were interested in doing for our 2-year old son with high-risk neuroblastoma, we had already spent a year in treatment at Duke University, which, while renowned, had shown us an endemic lack of empathy, resources and collaboration within departments to the point that we continue to battle with the hospital's administrators over what we experienced so that it never, ever, happens to another family. So, coming to the CHKD clinic can only be described as a breath of fresh air, and an environment so child-friendly that Duke should start taking some notes. Dr. Lowe answered our many, many, MANY questions without betraying any judgment, and he has remained the ONLY doctor that my child is not in fear of seeing or being examined by. That floors me. What my son has been through should have looked more like this. This is what a good pediatric hemonc MD looks like, and systems everywhere could learn from this
