Superb Urologist
Dr. Fortenberry is as down to earth as any physician can get in my opinion. Contrary to the negative comments, I found him engaging and very informative. I gather he will engage commensurate to his patient's inquistiveness and interest; he will not browbeat or mesmerize you with his knowledge. I had Laser prostate surgery under his charge and it went just as he said it would. His staff is friendly and knowledgable. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome. Keep up the great work Dr. Fortenberry!

Dr. Fortenberry performed holmium laser surgery (HoLEP) on me less than three weeks ago for an enlarged prostate. I was referred to him by my urologist because of Dr. Fortenberry’s long and great track record with HoLEP. He is held in high regard by his colleagues. Very few urologists in the entire country can perform this procedure. Dr. Fortenberry has done nearly 400. At the initial consultation, Dr. Fortenberry could not have been more generous with his time or complete with his explanation of the procedure. I left with complete confidence in him. The surgery took about an hour and a half. There are no surgical incisions. I had absolutely no pain from the procedure. Twenty four hours after surgery my catheter was pulled. Within an hour I was urinating unlike I had in decades. I was no longer a hostage to urinary retention. In the days since my HoLEP, things have only gotten better. My sleep has improved dramatically—I don’t have to get up as often during the night. Truthfully, Dr. Fortenberry changed my life in a way that I never imagined possible. I’m thankful for his expertise and highly recommend him!

My husband was fit into the Dr. Fortenberry's schedule for removal of a catheter that Sentara emergency room had inserted for a UTI. We waited until Dr. Fortenberry arrived from surgery. He was yelling at the staff from his office to look for a form he needed. He mentioned that some nurse had tried telling him what to do. The staff mentioned that my husband was waiting for him and asked if the doctor wanted to put him in a room. Dr. Fortenberry said there was no reason to put my husband in a room if the staff person didn't find that form he was looking for. The doctor stormed out headed back to the hospital and told them he'd be back at lunch time. Our appointment was for 9:45. We sat there flabbergasted at his behavior. We told the staff we were leaving and asked them to return the insurance cards. She apologized and asked if we wanted to wait! We left.

Had hematuria and was uncomfortable with 1st local urol. so got second opinion from Cleveland Clinic which among other things advised self-cathing to be taught by local urol - that's what led to Dr. F. He spent a long time explaining options and his preferred surgical procedure for me. I opted to proceed and the 4 hour surgery due to enormous prostate and multiple large stones went extremely well. Minimal discomfort afterwards, no stents and fantastic improvement in flow and voiding within 5 weeks. In addition, his nurse Lisa was very comfortable to work with and a constant positive smiling source of encouragement. I would recommend Dr. F without hesitation.

I have been under doctor Fortenberry's care for several years and have always been pleased with his medical expertise and "bedside" manner... His nursing staff is the best! My wait times have always been acceptable - the only time I had to wait a little longer - was due to a medical emergency (if it were me that needed the immediate attention - I would like that consideration). I would recommend Dr. Fortenberry to all my friends. OH, and the Medicare question... NOT an issue here. There has never been an issue at this office!

BPH surgery in May several hrs from C-ville Foley installed and headed home but it clogged w/ blood clots ~1 hour from town w/ retention & severe pain. Arrived & went to ER for new cath. Next 4 days: bleeding, clots, blockage, retent & pain . Total 5 caths, 2 ER trips w/ overnite observs & irrigation w/ >doz 2L salines. HGB fell to 9.3 & HCT to 27 (~ 4 units). Both ER trips described as "w/ sig threat to life or function". End of rope when arrive in ER 2nd time. Dr F-Fb was URO on call & he came on Sun morn. Nurse said I'm lucky b/c "Dr F-Fb gets stuff done". He brought special collapse-resistant cath & quickly sized up prob. Rapid/forceful pump & suction many lg syringes of water til all clots removed. Nxt morn irrigat fluid clear & F-Fb there to release. I'm near normal now. Will be forever indebted to him & believe his decisive action saved me from severe injury/infection and possibly saved my life. His special cath & expert technique made the difference. Dr Fortenberry now my URO

Dr. Fortenberry has been the most wonderful doctor for my husband. Even for minor things he has been great, but for the fairly aggressive cancer that he caught very early, he was fantastic! Having the whole prostate removed due to a tumor can come with lots of side effects, but two years later he has NO side effects! (His cancer was completely removed of course!) This is almost unheard of! He is a fabulous surgeon! Recommended 100%!!

Had surgery for a simple issue and ended up with three problems as a result. He told me that the chance of my problem as a result of the surgery was less than 1 percent. I was told by the surgeon that I later saw at UVA that it was in the 30 percent range. He was very callous and uncaring after he botched things. Looking back, I realize that he not listing himself as a being credentialed as part of the American College of Surgeons or Urology. I am writing this only to help future patients.

Dr. Fortenberry is absolutely wonderful! He was the on-call doctor when my husband had complications from a kidney stone during a weekend. It was more serious than we thought, so Dr. Fortenberry met us at the ER, compiled a surgical team, and stayed until he was able to perform the necessary procedure- all on a gorgeous Sunday evening that he should have been spending at home! His bedside manner is great- he listens, answers all questions, and shows compassion. I couldn't be more grateful to him

Dr. Fortenberry performed the biopsy and after an aggressive cancer was confirmed, he ordered the bone scan/pelvic cat scan. The office never called to review those results or formulate a game plan. I left two messages with the front office that we wanted his opinion on a course of action and our call was NEVER returned. Thankfully, we are proactive and got into UVA immediately with the help of contacts.

Dr. Fortenberry was referred to me my my family doctor. He was absolutely super in helping me sort through a rising PSA problem, including a prostate biopsy that was totally painless! He then went the extra mile to refer me to some other doctors so I could better understand all the treatment options. A very dedicated professional who took the time to help me. His office staff was also super to work with - responsive, cheerful and knowledgeable. I highly recommend him and his practice.

The two bad reviews here are good examples of why one should be skeptical of Internet reviews. (Yes, that advice also applies to me, but I would be happy to discuss my experience with Dr. Fortenberry with anyone who emails and requests a conversation — jsr@jsr.net. Briefly, my experience could not have been better — immediate appointment, prostate surgery scheduled and performed within a week, outstanding outcome and support, incl cell phone for pm/wkend questions. I had prostate cancer which terrified me. My wife said to get a second opinion but I wanted immediate resolution, a big mistake! This man not only DOES NOT LISTEN but is a horrible surgeon. Due to this doctor causing a huge infection I had to seek out one to fix that! BEWARE! My new doctor told me Dr. F had been in his group and knew exactly why I wanted to change doctors!! Arrogant and in a rush to discharge you, more interested in how many surgeries than care! I am on FB, contact me~!

Those two bad reviews have convinced me to write this review. I'm not sure what Doctor they saw, because other than why I was there, I had just had one of the best specialist Doctor interactions I've ever had with Dr. Fortenberry. He was very informative, thorough, willing to discuss my questions and concerns - and his staff was noticeably professional and knowledgeable. He even called me personally with follow-up information. Please see Dr. Fortenberry with complete confidence.

My appointment started 40 minutes late on a very slow day; the music was too loud in the waiting room and they ignored my request to turn it down; Fortenberry showed ignorance and indifference to the vast literature on lifestyle & prostate cancer and his bedside manner was atrociously poor across the board. If you're hoping for an open-minded, progressively informed and encouraging urologist, look elsewhere. Indeed, the other review herein surely reflects my experience.
