Dr. Van Flandern did a total knee replacement at New England Baptist hospital. I am having a much easier recovery than I did with the other knee 10 years ago. He is top notch for sure

An excellent doctor and a great team
I saw Dr. Vanflandern and his nurse practitioner Brian several times. I received a series of cortisone injections and I’ve just had my hip replaced. I’m still in recovery from the surgery, but I found the doctor, Brian and the entire team very professional, responsive and helpful. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to choose these folks my healthcare

Very straightforward and confidant
Dr Van Flandern evaluated my partial knee replacements from the past. Clearly felt I should have had total replacements due to patella femoral arthritis. Surgery not necessary at this time. Referred to physical therapy to strengthen my quads.

Difficult accomplishment
Dr. VanFlandern replaced my hip in December of '22. Recovery with physical therapy was going very well until I lost the range of motion in that hip. It turned out that I was growing a hetertopic ossification (a bone mass) at the hip. I understand this fluke happens only about one in a hundred thousand cases and that it is due to the rare reaction to bone injury or surgery. Dr. VanFlandern's first in his long career. After waiting the required eighteen months for the H.O. to 'mature' Dr. VanFlandern performed the delicate removal of the H.O., maneuvering around the femoral artery and nerve leaving me with no numbness or any deficit. I finally have the range of motion to be able to be in a sitting position. I look forward to continued improvement as I am only five days out from the surgery. I am grateful for Dr. VanFlander's skill and knowledge and I would highly recommend him for orthopedic surgeries.

My experience with Dr. van Flandern and his team was horrible. I had surgery to repair a labrum tear. The surgery should not have been completed but was and resulted in complete loss of use of my hip. I came into my two-week follow up appointment on crutches and was ridiculed when I stated I could not walk. I was informed that I needed more exercise and that I should gradually start a running program and lose weight. In tears, I had to demand that they do imaging of the hip. Within 30-minutes, we learned that my hip was destroyed (bone on bone) and that I needed a total hip replacement...at 42 years old. They were rude, condescending and left me couch bound for months as I searched for a new surgeon. I was incredibly disheartened as I had heard very good things about the practice. I would never return to this surgeon or the practice as I felt as though I was just another number, just a bill to an insurance company for a procedure that never, ever should've been attempted.

His office is useless after your surgery. I literally have called 9 times over the last week trying to get someone to change my medication- to a different drug that's not an opioid, or give me something for the nausea that the opioid is causing. They can't seem to do either one. Every day the assistant tells me she is going to call the nurse practitioner and that they will call in a prescription. Every day goes by and no one calls in a new medicine. Every day I am working not to take the medicine that makes me sick. Then the pain is unmanageable and I take the medicine that makes me feel sick, in addition to not helping with the pain. I am pretty discouraged with his team and so cannot give him good rating.

So far, so good!. I had an Anterior approach, R Total Hip replacement on 10/03/19. Plan is to have the second hip done on 12/02/19 and then be playing golf again by February, 2020. Very keen focus on rehab on hip 1 while preparing for hip 2. He has always been prompt, informative and responsive. I really enjoy the focus and his primarily biz related interactions. Staff is fantastic. Referred to Dr. Van Flandern by head of anesthesiology who supports all of Baptist OR work as well as a peer physician who had both of his hips done by Dr. Van Flandern as well. Two powerful referrals!
