If you thought "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was a thing of the past, you thought wrong. I was shocked and horrified by how punitive and carceral the environment is for mental health patients at Albany Med's ER. I was injected with drugs against my will and made to wait 24 hours in a scary, freezing, uncomfortable environment with absolutely nothing to do. I repeatedly asked to see a crisis counselor; I was told there was none and to stay in my cell. After 24 hours, I got four minutes of attention from a rushed psychiatric resident and two minutes of face time with Dr. Mursi. This experience was personality-changing trauma; I have lasting PTSD. I got support from the Office of Mental Health, the Department of Health, and the Mental Hygiene Legal Service. The Office of Professional Medical Conduct is investigating the ER doctor who admitted me; I really hope she loses her license. Dr. Mursi is to be avoided at all costs. Run as far away as you can!
