I would not hessitate to recommend Dr. Van Horne.
I am nearing the end of the 3rd month of my second total hip replacement (both hips) and I am very happy with both procedures. This procedure was complicated by the fact that I injured my lower leg (calf/achilles) before surgery. Dr. Van Horne recommended going ahead with surgery as recovery from one would not hamper recovery from the other and could possibly help. The hip has been healing fine, no problems, no pain but the lower leg will take some more time. I'm so glad that he went ahead with the hip replacement because it has eliminated the hip pain. it would have been much more difficult to deal with both (hip&lower leg). Dr. Van Horne is very thorough with both pre-op and post-op instructions. He does his best to prepare you for every possible scenerio. Even though you may not experience some of the situations, I feel that it is best.

Amazing!
Dr Van Horne is the absolute best doctor! He is very professional and prepares his patient before and after surgery on what to expect. My left knee replacement has gone perfectly and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a knee replacement. He provides you with details on what to do after your surgery. If you follow them to the T you will have an amazing outcome. I have done sports all my life and through college competitively. I wore out my knee and now only after 2.5 weeks post surgery my knee feels better than it has since high school.

Amazing surgeon all around!!
Dr. Van Horne is the best of the best! My dad is about to have knee replacement #2 and is looking forward to it. 8wks after his 1st and he’s bending his knee beyond the expected and is pain free! Your recovery truly depends on how well you follow your surgeons instructions. Take the medications/supplements no matter how insignificant you feel they are. Do the exercises exactly as instructed as well. As a joint coach I strongly advise you to encourage the person having surgery to trust their surgeon. The steps they have in place are there to ensure the best possible results. A few tips: -Ice, ice, ice! Swelling is normal but it will be worse without it -Night pain is not a myth! Take the pain medication for the first few nights. It really is pretty bad without until about night 4. -Follow through! Don’t stop exercising or taking meds as instructed just because you feel better.

Excellent surgeon and staff for phenomenal results
Excellent surgeon + excellent staff + thorough prep = fantastic results. Couldn't be more happy at 8 weeks post op; I'm walking 5 miles/day on new hip. The keys were: 1) Pre op prep and testing was VERY thorough; at times I felt it was overdone, but after surgery I realized it was key to a good outcome. 2) Pain was minimal, far less than feared. The muscle relaxants were really key--his surgery stretches muscles but doesn't cut them in half. That naturally results in some muscle cramps for a while, and the muscle cramp med as far more helpful than narcotics. I only used three half pill doses of narcotics after surgery... 3) PT pre and post surgery, plus his list of exercises--it really works. Do them! 4) If I knew I'd feel this good, I'd have done this a couple years ago. I have so much more energy and get so much more done in a day now--I didn't realize the pain was holding me back so much. 5) Some people complain that Van Horne's system and approach is too rigid...My thoughts

If you need a knee replacement see Dr. van Horne
My experience with Dr. Van Horne and his staff was wonderful. I had stage 4 Osteoarthritis of my right knee and had a total knee replacement. He explained the procedure well and with his written explanations and directions of pre-procedure, surgery, and after surgery events I understood everything that was happening. I was up walking and even doing a few stairs on the day of surgery, going to physical therapy two days after surgery and recovering rapidly. I am 2.5 weeks post surgery and walking without assistance. Can bend my knee to 120 degrees and have very little pain throughout the entire procedure. I would recommend Dr. Van Horne and his way of knee replacement to anyone needing it done. It is great.

A coach's thoughts
I was a coach to a friend who was in for a knee replacement. (her second) She ended up having unforeseen complications that put her in a brace with a new knee but a torn ligament. Because she had done all her homework, followed Dr. Vanhorn's instructions her healing has been remarkable. She will start PT on her knee in 8 weeks, after the ligament is strong. Although her second knee didn't go as smoothly as the first, doing everything she was told, I believe made things much easier on her and her recovery. Dr. VanHorne is awesome (and funny)

December 20, at 87, Dr. Van Horne replaced my right knee. My Joint Coach and I were impressed from the first visit. Now, I am walking better and easier than I have for many years and pain free, two months past surgery. Dr. Van Horne's staff is a friendly, caring, knowledgable, Professional team. From diagnosing, to explaining pre-surgery and post surgery expectations they covered everything well and listened to questions. Then, they gave us handouts with the information for us to study. Success of the surgery is 95% up to me, but Dr. Van Horne knows what it takes to make it work and has given great guidelines to follow. He also shares possible issues with major surgery and how to keep them from becoming problems. The Joint Coach is a great support . Yes, it is hard work and time consuming to follow his guidelines but I did, before and after surgery. In 2 weeks I was walking better, at 8 weeks I have to remind myself to us a cane when I go outside. Wonderful new life.

19 months ago, Dr. Van Horne did a TKR on my right knee. When I came out of surgery and started rehab, I was pretty sure it wasn't right. There was 'sloppiness' in two planes: forward and backward, and side-to-side. After the full course of physical therapy the therapist's opinion was that he could do no more to help this joint, and that it was unlike anything he had seen before. I consulted Dr. VH on this concern three times; he insisted that there was nothing wrong with the joint. I consulted two PCP's, another physical therapist, and an orthopedic surgeon at Slocum in Eugene. All agreed on the assessment. I consulted an orthopedic surgeon in my new location and was told the only solution was a revision. I have just now had that revision with the surgeon's findings: too much bone removed from the femur initially; the resulting increased gap 'patched' with an oversized meniscus prosthesis; femoral component rotated out of proper alignment; no way to fix what was in place.

I am a 63 year old woman who underwent a successful total knee surgery from Dr. James Van Horne just 3 weeks ago. His pain management plan worked so well for me with needing narcotics for only 3 days. First you undergo a narcotic trial and then a non-narcotic trial to ensure your body can tolerate the meds. Then you start a personalized pain management of acetaminophen arthritis 1300mg 3x daily, NSAID Celecoxib 400mg daily, Gabapentin 300mg at bedtime, 1 gm Vitamin C and 20mg Omeprazole for 7 days. After surgery, the above plus Oxycodone 5mg for 3 days with Promethazine; muscle relaxant 400-800mg 3x daily with additional PRN at night and Voltaren gel 3x daily for pain. The muscle relaxant systemic which blocks nerve pain was key to pain management and a great substitution for Oxycodone. I wish every surgeon would practice his regime. It just might cure the opioid epidemic.

My first visit with Dr. Van Horne resulted in a diagnosis of Stage 4 Osteoarthritis and a recommendation for total left knee replacement. Dr. Van Horne, and his staff, presented a comprehensive pre-surgery and post surgery program that, if followed, had led to his reputation for dramatic success. The surgery itself went very well and I responded to Dr. Van Horne’s challenge to do post-surgery exercises in order to maximize the potential that knee replacement surgery provided. At this writing, I am seven + weeks into my rehab program. Following Dr. Van Horne’s guidelines– and working with my physical therapist– has given me a 130 degree range of motion in my left knee and the ability to walk considerable distances (including uphill/downhill) without significant discomfort. There is yet much to be accomplished, but the surgery and medical guidance I have received leaves me much encouraged as to what future outdoor adventures await.

From my very first visit with Dr Van Horne,I knew I was in good hands. He clearly showed me my xrays of my bone on bone knees and explained my options. I choose total replacement. My first surgery was July 22 and it went well.I have to tell you that I was very happily surprised to see him come into my recovery room twice! That never happens! Well I'm not going to tell you that rehab is easy or pain free,it is not. But I will tell you that I did follow his protocol to the letter...and it works! At my 8 week visit he was very happy with my results and so am I. In fact I am so confident, that I am having my other knee replaced October 13th. I can't say enough about Dr Van Horne and all the wonderful staff, thanks to everyone that helped me! See you again soon.

Dr VH’s program for prepping a patient for the best possible surgery outcome initially seems overwhelming. However all the info he gives is essential for an excellent outcome. If you put in the time studying the materials, doing the exercises, doing all the mental and home prep work you will have an amazing outcome. And that is what I did. The RESULT-by the afternoon of the next day after surgery I was walking totally unassisted, as if I hadn’t just had surgery. I reaped the rewards of losing weight prior, staying physically active and learning his materials. At just 2 wks out I am very close to the desired 120 degrees range of motion, of course with PT visits. Pre-Surgery “time spent” gives you post-surgery rewards. And that is his goal for you as well…it’s as simple as that.

One year after total knee replacement of my left knee I have resumed refereeing high school football games. I can sprint at full speed, can cut to the left and right, can accelerate from a standstill, can move backwards quickly and can keep up with high school running backs. The first three months post-surgery were no fun, but one year post-surgery I'm back to normal. Thank you, Dr. Van Horne

Dr. VanHorne and his staff helped me so much. My right hip was bone on bone for 7 months. Excruciating Pain for me. Was put on strong (narcotic) meds. This would be my 2nd hip replacement. The surgery was performed, I quit the strong (narcotic) meds. and in just under 4 weeks have very little pain, walking without a cane or walker. Thank you so much Dr. Vanhorne and Staff.
