Horrible service
I was on time for my appointment with this urologist. After waiting for 45 minutes, I asked what was going on. I was told I was next. After an hour, I asked again. Told he was running a little late, but I was next. After another 15 minutes, same thing. I finally left after 1.5 hours. I asked them to cancel my appointment. They asked me if I wanted to reschedule. No. I will find another urologist that cares about his patients' time. I can understand 15 minutes late, even a half hour, but this is completely ridiculous. Without any communication. Horrible experience.

May well have saved my life
I was referred to Dr. Engel by my primary care physician (PCP) of 30 years after being diagnosed with prostate cancer that had spread. MY PCP said that for serious conditions, Dr. Engel was unrivaled. That was my experience. At the time of my diagnosis, I also had kidney malfunction related to prostate issues. I underwent prostate surgery with Dr. Engel (TURP) that completely resolved kidney and prostate issues. Separately, Dr. Engel, working closely with my oncologist, prescribed medications that completely eradicated the prostate cancer. I am immensely grateful. Immensely. I cannot recommend Dr. Engel too highly.

Dr. Engel performed a prostate biopsy that put me in the ER for four days. Dr. Engel couldn't be reached. Nothing but bad experiences with each prior appointment. Prostate patients get another referral -avoid Engel.

his PA is either stupid or lies
I had a UTI. I asked for a Antibiotic Sensitivity Test. I was told that an Antibiotic Sensitivity Test was run and the showed me a culture result by his PA; I asked to see the sensitivity test results several times; the PA continued to show the culture result. THE SENSITIVITY TEST WAS NEVER RUN. I had a sensitivity test run and the bacteria was not AT ALL sensitive to any of the antibiotics that were being prescribed. I can't deal with lying or incompetence. He needs to fire some people and assume that some of his patients are quite smart and read.

Horrible doctor
My father, a doctor himself, waited for a very long time in crowded waiting room to be evaluated for enlarged prostate and recent serious urinary retention. Dr. Engel spent less than 5 minutes barking to my father, asking why was he there, and without Dr. Engel ever examining my father or his prostate, said just talk to my nurse and stormed out of the room. My father, (a wonderful doctor loved by his patients,)was flabbergasted by the rudeness, lack of any history taking and especially no examination by Dr. Engel. My father said he would never go back and that this was a horrible way to be treated by a rude doctor, who evidently was short staffed but still overbooked.

Find Another Urologist
When he is not rushing you out of an office visit, Dr. Engel likes to talk. He will talk about his knowledge, skill, and expertise. He will tell you how experienced he is. What he doesn’t do is listen to his patients. Nor does he make his patients feel comfortable and welcomed. Instead he communicates clearly that being under his care is a favor to you the patient. He may indeed be a wonderful and skilled a doctor/surgeon as he thinks he is. I just don’t know. I was so upset at how he behaved during the four appointments I had with him that I found another doctor. I would not recommend this doctor or this practice to anyone.

This is the guy to avoid
He missed a crucial detail in my biopsy report which caused me to lose valuable time obtaining treatment. I sought treatment elsewhere after Dr. Engel became defensive when I pointed out his omission. Arrogance doesn't begin to describe his attitude and condescension toward patients. DC area is blessed with excellent urologists. Engel isn't among them--despite his boasts to the contrary.

Avoid Dr Engel
Dr. Engel has been the worst doctor that I have ever had while living in the DC area for 10+ years. If you are looking for a specialist in urology, I strongly recommend that you go elsewhere. First, I waited over 90 minutes for a 5-minute consultation. When I had the surgery, I also waited another 90 minutes before the doctor even came into the room. Second, he is extremely arrogant in a way I have never experienced for a doctor. Lastly, he provided minimal information at the surgery and only asked if I had any questions.

An arrogant man who talks down to his patients and wastes their time. I got in contact with his office for a men's health issue. First he schedules a telehealth visit where he tells me to take three (3) advil three times (3!) a day until I feel better. After a days I had to stop taking them because of serious side effects. Next he sees me in person, tells me the problems are all in my head and will go away on their own (why prescribe me 9 advil/day if that's the case?). After insurance, I paid nearly $500 for the luxury of this visit. And today, over a year later, I get a notice from a debt collection agency saying I owe an additional $200!! I'm disputing this debt, but even if I don't have to pay it, I'm still out $500 and am now dealing with a debt collector. All for this arrogant, unpleasant, and pointless experience! Steer clear, find another urologist. You won't regret it.

This practice is terrible. My original urologist in this practice moved to West Virginia without notice, and I was transferred to his colleague, Dr. Engel. It took 5 weeks for me to get a virtual appointment with him, which he was 30 minutes late to. My subsequent appointment was cancelled by his office literally one hour before the appointment time, saying he was out of the country. (How is this not knowable earlier?) I was then given a follow-up virtual appointment time 10 days later, which his assistant asked me to dial in 30 minutes early to. I waited in front of my computer for an hour before giving up. He then called me 45 mins after my appointment time and offered no apology or explanation. Dr. Engel may be medically qualified, but he's also either overwhelmed by an influx of patients, uninterested in his reputation, unconcerned with patient satisfaction, or just terrible at managing his office's operations. I'll be moving on, as others have also noted. Avoid avoid avoid.

Jason is a nice guy but he treated me for enlarged prostrate rather than a inactive bladder. What is really infuriating is that his back office is incompetent: I cancelled an appointment by email but when I followed up by phone, they evidently don't read their emails. Furthermore, they never billed me but turn the copay over to a collection agency, even after I brought the first instance to their attention.

My issues with Dr. Engel are more with the administration of his office than with him. I think he is an average doctor with an undertone of arrogance. My initial visit was scheduled as in person, after traveling to downtown DC I was told he was only doing telehealth. I was scheduled for a kidney stone removal, all written communications identified the wrong side. I corrected this in writing, but the error carried through on all communications. I was given the wrong addresses to get testing done. While laying on the gurney awaiting my procedure, Dr. Engel asked for an x-ray that had never been ordered. My 2nd procedure was scheduled for a morning that was predicted to be icy. I asked if it could be rescheduled and it was pushed to 4pm. I was concerned that this was late for a Fri. and had the office confirm the time. I began taking the antibiotic Thurs. as instructed. Late Thurs. I received a call from the Adm. canceling the procedure. Surgery Ctr. closed. Found a new Dr.!

Dr Engel is a pompous physician who talks to you as if you are mentally handicapped. Tells you not to use this or that word (he knows better) and then you can catch him using them... He tells you lies (or invents facts) and makes you come back to read the results of an exam (not done by him) where everything is ok. And charges you $350 for it. When I told him he could have given me a phone call instead, he said that "they" did not operate that way. Stay away.

Dr. Engel’s expert surgical skills gave me back a high quality of life. For 9 years I suffered with radiation cystitis which was the result of proton external radiation treatment for prostate cancer. It caused severe chronic pain, retention and spasms that continued to get worse over time. After trying everything else to remedy this including HBOT, InterStim implant and many different meds which never helped alot the decision was made to remove my bladder. Dr. Engel did a great job, and I will always be grateful to him.

I've waited a bit to reflect on my experience before I submit a review, just to see if time and some honest assessing would change my opinion. It hasn't. The office is like a NY deli—take a number, give a urine specimen, sit "over there, down the hall" on a bench, and wait until you're called...and while you wait, you get to hear all the conversations in the adjacent rooms. Then, once you are in the examining room, you need to be prepared to spar with what is essentially a "jock doc" with attitude— an arrogant dude who thinks he's helping you, but doesn't really know how to relate to another man's concerns. Forget about asking questions. He'll accuse you of not listening. I needed advice and reassurance, not a boxing match. Maybe he has all the answers and works magic for other men, but I'm not hiring him to be on my team, going forward. And, I'm eager to ask my primary doc why he ever referred me to him.

Back in July 2018, after consulting with multiple surgeons and experts, I was diagnosed with stage 1 Prostate Cancer. My choices were many and confusing. I settled on Dr Engle because he was direct, honest and didn’t in anyway mislead me. He shared with me and my wife everything that could go right or wrong. There have been many comments about Dr Engle’s personality and bedside manners. Candidly, I could care less of any surgeon’s personality. I only cared about his talent, experiences, intelligence and his hands. I was very fortunate that my surgery and recovery went well and as planned. Any procedure comes with risks. For anyone to suggest any competent surgeon, like Dr Engle, caused any side effect or the surgery wasn’t 100% as one thought it would, it’s unfair and misguided. I have been under Dr Engel’s care for almost 2 years. He has always been respectful towards me and my wife. He always answers any questions I have and he personally follows up by calling me when asked.

My husband experienced an ecoli infection after Dr.Engel performed a cystoscopy in his office. Within 36hrs. My husband was on his death bed - 20 hrs. In the ER at GW hospital and a total of six days in the hospital- he had to go home with a pic line. Dr. Engel stopped by the ER for a few minutes and we never heard from him again. Unimaginable that this could have happened!
