I had Mohs surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma from the apex of my scalp. Pre-surg, Dr. Zitelli absolutely assured me that the wound would heal in about 2 weeks without any temporary or permanent hair loss. Yet, when the stitches were removed, the incision split open and for months I dressed a painful, decaying, necrotic open wound surrounded by a 2 in. /1 in. bald spot. Because my infection culture was negative, I assume these complications occurred because he stretched the skin too much during wound closure. It took 6 months to heal and I am left with a permanent, indented 1 inch/1.5 inch bald spot. In consultation with other doctors, I confirmed that removal of a scalp basal cell cancer via Mohs surgery is medically necessary; so, I am glad I had surgery and am cancer free. But, my post-surg trauma would have been far less had Dr. Zitelli been transparent from the onset explaining that painful complications can occur and the cosmetic outcome sometimes is unsatisfactory.

Most professional and caring office and Dr Zitelli is the best Moh’s surgeon I have been to. Have had another Moh’s surgeon that was not as experienced. I Just recommended John Zitelli to a friend of mine today. I told her to go to her regular dermatologist and have a biopsy and do not allow her doctor to refer her to ANYONE BUT JOHN Zitelli, MD. He left no scar and was so caring and his staff was so lovely and professional.

I've had several skin cancers removed by Dr. Zitelli and his associates. His office is the most efficient I have ever encountered. The surgery was precise and the resulting scars minimal. I would never consider treatment for a skin cancer by anyone else but Dr. Z or his trained associates. He is simply the best anywhere, not just in Pittsburgh.
