Dr. Joseph Nichols, MD

Dr. Joey is a great listener. No matter how inarticulate my rendering of my symptoms, he listens to everything I have to say about my health concern, and then gives great advice. He's reassured me when I was worried for nothing. He's encouraged me to go to the ER if there was something to be concerned about. He epitomizes caring.

Dr. Nichols is very personable, affable and focused a lot on getting to know me and my habits, practices, diet, etc.

Dr. Nichols provided excellent care on my first visit— listening, asking questions, and genuinely interested in getting to know me, including understanding the circumstances of my life that could be impacting my health. At a time when HMOs and large health systems feel increasingly less personal, I couldn’t be happier to have found a family-focused primary care doctor.

I'm really happy I decided to take a chance with Dr. Joey. I'll admit I was a little scared off by him being out of network and it took me 7 months to finally decide on seeing him. In my experience it's extremely hard to find a provider that both seems knowledgeable and you're comfortable enough to actually bring up all your concerns. I haven't been a patient very long but I can honestly say I've never felt this comfortable with a doctor before. Definitely highly recommend!

Dr. Joey visited me at my home when I had a bout of vertigo. He came within 90 minutes, and knew exactly what to do! He even stayed on for a conversation about our mutual experiences as therapists. Bravo! Takoma Park is lucky to have a "country doctor" who makes house visits.

This was my second visit to Dr. Nichols and he was as through, responsive and compassionate as he was for my first visit. He responded immediately to my phone call and provided me with the medical care that I needed. I feel very fortunate to have him as my doctor.

Our first visit covered all the basics, both physical and mental health. He understands the relationship between the two. I felt well cared for, was offered options for care, and he proceeded at a pace that was comfortable for me. So glad to have found him.

I had been looking for a doctor with whom I could feel comfortable talking about both physical problems and mental/emotional issues after experiencing how closely they interact with each other. Also a doctor who could discuss the challenges of aging. As soon as I saw Dr. Nichols’ website where he writes about helping people work from their center, I thought maybe he was the right doctor for me and once I spoke to him in an introductory phone call I was ready to go ahead with setting up an appointment. Dr. Nichols makes time to talk, I never felt rushed, I felt heard, and that Dr. Nichols could see me as a whole person, not just a patient with a list of symptoms. He helped me understand my test results, affirmed decisions I’d made about treatments and also suggested other medications that could be helpful. He was warm and caring and I look forward to working with him again.

I am seeing Dr. Nichols for counseling. It was my first time going out-of-network and initially I was really skeptical of all the good reviews online. I did due dilligence to see if they were true, including checking forums, other review sites, Maryland Judiciary Case Search, and The Wayback Machine, and also talked to other physicians, including his former residency director. Everything is true. I have found him to be patient, flexible, and skilled in active listening. Which sounds so simple, but it's huge because most physicians don't do this. As a stubborn healthcare worker myself, he is exactly the kind of physician I needed.

Came into Takoma Park and felt poorly last evening. Tested positive for Covid while at our daughter’s home and Dr. Nichols was Johnny on the spot to evaluate, advise and prescribe a suitable medication. He spent all the time needed to get me comfortable with the side effects and precautions associated with the prescription and provided good quarantine tips to follow while visiting here. Top notch value!
