I started seeing Dr. Straus in September of 2024 for psychiatric medical management. My former psychiatrist had been most helpful to me, but he retired. Thus, I was apprehensive about the transition. However, I have found, given that medical management psychiatric visits are only 20 minutes, Dr. Straus insightful, responsive and willing to entertain my questions about psychiatric issues I don't understand. Within the time constraint, I would highly recommend him.

My OBGYN who is leaving NS referred Dr. Herman. This was after I had to report Dr. Joshua Straus to the medical board, due to the fact that I confronted him about ripping me off my meds, attempting to change every single one, and told me that he has “more important patients who are suicidal to deal with, and he does not know why I am calling him, and that if I felt that he put me in harms way to report me to the medical board”. I did. This was July of 2023. I called on January 16, 2024 to have a change of care, the receptionist just told me that it could take up to three weeks. I then got a message on NS connect to fill out the BH form again, and that someone would call me in five days for placement. THAT NEVER HAPPENED. I got a phone call the next day asking for reasoning of change, and I stated unprofessionalism. I explained what happened, and that I did NOT want to get black-listed due to what Straus did to me. Of course, she says “we don’t do that”.

Exceptional care. Treats patient as a whole with medical complexities. Works well with neurology and pain medicine Dr to treat the causes of depression and anxiety in patient with chronic illness. Compassionate thoughtful and wise. Been thru several Psych’s with my husband. Dr straus worked hard to get him help at a very good inpatient facility. Looked for resources for me as a spouse. Genuinely cares about both my husband and myself.

Great help from Dr. Strauss
In my first meeting with Dr. Strauss, he *understood* me. That is hard to do in a first meeting, but he went on to refer me to another therapist to help with a separate issue, and I am looking forward to my next appointment with him.

I am very thankful for Joshua. Joshua, was very patient and knowledgeable. He offered me a variety of ways to help on multiple different mediums, in addition to prescriptions. Most of the Psychiatrist I have met just force medications. He is actually invested in helping people. It seems like he truly cares. I would highly recommend him and his expertise to those struggling with emotional issues. Appointment scheduling was easy as can be. Using the NorthShoreConnect App. Or, by easily calling the office. You may have to wait a little longer than you would like for an appointment, but it is worth the wait. The best are busy:)

Quack
I barely survived this doctor. I cannot believe that he is still allowed to practice. He indefensibly prevented me from being able to receive care through the NorthShore University Healthcare System where he works out of. I am sharing my experience to warn others about this Quack.

Arrogant and Unprofessional
Waited for months for an appointment and he was late but his office had reached out so I was understanding. Second appointment he didn't show up until I called his office - he was an hour late. Third and final appointment he again didn't show up and then tried to explain it away by telling me how busy he is! Yeah, I'm busy too but I don't routinely schedule appointments I can't keep! When I told him I would no longer need his services he said, "good luck finding someone else with your insurance." He should not be allowed to see patients!!

Dr. Straus is wonderful - he has helped me immensely and given me insights into my issues that no other therapist has. Coping skills, medication information, how to deal with traumas in a new way, it has all helped me a lot. I highly recommend Dr. Straus.

He didn't help my family member. Family member felt rushed and that Dr Straus really didn't care about his problems. He put my family member on very high dose pill and didn't follow up. Called his office when family member went off the rails and they didn't try very hard to follow up. Now we have to start completely over.

Cant stand more "therapy" – May 23, 2020
×Post a ResponseAre you Dr. Straus?
I survived this doctor. It is troubling that the Antidepresssents and Antipsychotic he dishes out are the very cause of the symptoms themselves, especially as you try to come off them. Just like the opioid crisis, psychotropic drugs are also misleading and dangerous as are the "professionals" who give them out without warning you of the high risks involved and strong probabilities of poor outcomes, including insomnia, akethesia, homicidal/suicidal thoughts and actions, etc, They are also linked to the mass shootings across our country. These poisons disrupt your neurons and poison your mind and body. I will Keep sharing my experience to warn others and continue to sue the reckless doctors and pharmaceutical companies who harm the public.

For male patients, I would highly recommend Dr. Straus. For female patients like myself, I have some reservations about recommending. Dr. Straus is very intelligent -- and knows it -- and has the white male + doctor + intelligent arrogance and some disregard for others' feelings. He does not treat me as if I have equal intelligence to him and has discounted when I have talked to him about side effects from a medicine (no bruises all over my body are not due to being a middle age woman).

From my very first visit, Dr. Straus was different from any other psychiatrist I have ever been to. I was very weary of seeing a psychiatrist after being off of meds for a couple of years and being given a variety of diagnoses over the years. My primary care doctor recommended him highly because of my concerns and I am so happy she did. He finally gave me an accurate diagnosis, got me on the right cocktail of meds to help me get back to being “me” again and never pushes meds or dosage changes.

Dr STRAUS is amazing. He really spends the time to thoroughly explore all possibilities that could be contributing to struggles as opposed to just throwing medicine at everything. The flip side of his thoroughness is that he’s always running significantly late. But it’s worth it knowing I have such good care.

Professionalism is an issue. Dr. Straus is always at least 25 minutes late for every appointment and as much as 50. He does not seem apologetic when the issue is raised, even when his tardiness causes his patient to miss work time. If you have a VERY flexible schedule and don't mind spending loads of time in a waiting room, then Dr. Straus might work for you. If not for the lack of respect for patients' time, I would highly recommend him.

My visit was for depression and anxiety that was no longer managed by talk therapy. He examined every aspect of my life to determine where I might be able to find relief. He even touched on the health of our dog! We discussed my small business, relationships, and lifestyle. He worked with me to develop a treatment plan that included a different kind of therapy I hadn't considered and medication. I had questions between visits and he responded quickly. I found joy again! Thank you, Dr. Straus
