Always late to appointments, spends half the time on the phone with her veterinarian, doesn't listen to you, rushes you out the door. Also prescribed me incorrect medicine

Expert, meticulous, persistent, caring provider.
Dr Spelman is truly the best most professional and caring psychiatrist in the country. She has worked with me for more than 10 years. First she helped me through post partum depression with both of my children when they were born. And later she helped me through life changing trauma and a brain injury. She is up to date on her clinical knowledge. She collaborates with her patients adjusting medications as needed. She advocates for her patients as needed. She is the reason I am alive and functioning today. I have clinical experience and have worked with countless psychiatrists and other specialties as a professional. There is no one that can hold a candle to Dr Spelman and her ability to restore the best possible quality of life for patients facing challenges with depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, brain injury and more. She truly cares about her patients and takes the time needed to assure the best possible care.

Helpful, attentive, thorough
Always seemed to have reviews notes from last meeting, asked pertinent questions, referred to group which was a game changer, staff quick to respond and follow through. Exceedingly happy here with Dr Spelman, and with Dr. she referred me to. I moved out of state and sadly have never been able to duplicate this experience.

I had a bad incident with the staff that run Dr. Spelman's office. They told me they need to have a quick phone call with me to check whether I qualified for an appointment with her. They called me last week and did a 5min quick screen to see if she could see me, and told me I was not going to get charged because it was not an appointment, just a pre-screen. However, I was surprised with another call this Monday morning from Shannon N. Maximov, that had no idea they had done a pre-screen with me and seemed totally lost and did not even know why she called me. I explained to her I had done the pre-screening last week. She proceed to ask me a few more questions about my history (we talked for a little more than 5min). Today I was surprised with a $512 bill and a claim that I had an appointment with this person, which I NEVER SCHEDULED (and this appointment shows at MyNW portal like it had been scheduled, which is a lie that makes me disgusted with whoever issued this bill). I am in touch with the billing dept at NW Medicine and my insurance to reverse this dishonest claim. This is unfortunate because I was looking forward to work with Dr Spelman, but now I am frustrated to need to waste the scarce time I have outside my work, working to cancel a claim that should have never been issued. Moreover, there is no way to directly reach her office to have this figured out directly without involving other people, as we can only to call the NW Billing Dept, which is separated from her office. The reason for my review is so that the staff is instructed to not bill patients for appointments that were not scheduled and stop misleading patients to believe they are just doing a 5min pre-screen, but get surprised with a full bill of a psychiatric evaluation without even seeing the doctor. Extremely disrespectful.

Excellent provider for my depression/ADD/anxiety
Dr. Spelman has been treating me for many years and I always feel confident that I’m getting the most up-to-date and appropriate care possible. She has years of experience dealing with adult ADD/ADHD and related conditions (depression, anxiety) and puts that knowledge into the drugs and behavioral modification advice she uses to treat my changing mental & physical health. I’m sure working w/ADD patients like me is NOT EASY but she never seems to take my compliance issues personally. She doesn’t give up on me and works to get me to higher levels of functioning and “happiness”. She also works w/me through every insurance and drug store complication that comes up, and with “controlled substance” meds, there are continual issues. I always feel there is enough time to address my issues and that she takes my problems seriously. I feel lucky to have her as my psychiatrist.

Dr. Spelman is absolutely professional and amazing! I have been a patient of hers since 2008 when she diagnosed me with Bipolar Disorder 1. I came to her office suicidal, I had 2 small children, a marriage that was on the rocks, and I had lost my apartment. I didn't know how to handle life. Little did I know I had this disorder my entire life. Dr. Spelman admitted me to Alexian Brothers and after treatment, I followed up with her. She is a GENIUS with medication management. She knows all the new (and old) medications, how they work, how they work in combination, side effects, and anything you need to know about them. She is a collaborator, a partner in your care. She tells it like it is, she doesn't pull any punches or coddle you. Dr. Spelman is very inspirational to me and I would recommend her to anyone who needs mental health treatment.

I have been seeing Dr. Spelman for a while now. I had my ups and downs and I am beyond fortunate to have her as my doctor. In my experience with Dr. Spelman she has gone above and beyond her "role" as a psychiatrist. I have been on many rocky roads, and she never "left me out in the cold", she stuck by me through thick and thin, and has always been supportive. Speaking for myself she is genuine, caring and compassionate. She is readily available and always goes that extra mile to meet my needs. There are not enough words to describe how awesome I feel she is. I can't thank you enough for being here for...??

I have been under Dr. Spelman's care for six years. I can honestly say that I believe Dr. Spelman has saved my life~ I have severe anxiety after seeing several other physicians, Dr. Spelman is the first psychiatrist to actually LISTEN to me explain my symptoms, and prescribe the appropriate combination of medications for me. She is smart, kind, reliable, and stays up to date on the latest research and medical information. Anybody would be extremely fortunate to receive care from Dr. Spelman!

I've been under Dr. Spelman's care for meds management for more than 10 years. I wouldn't go to anyone else... I would follow her anywhere. I spent 20 years of my life on the wrong medication for my bipolar disorder. Since starting with Dr. Spelman, she has prescribed a combination of meds that has kept me on an even keel for almost the entire (85-90%) time. I believe that she saved my life and my marriage.

One of the smartest MDs I know (I know a lot). Personable, patient oriented. Very good on returning emergency phone calls and medication needs. Unfortunately, not taking new patients last I knew.
