Dr. Day went over and beyond to ensure my comfort and explained everything so I understood and took the time to review my old records. Once my cancer was diagnosed as having metastasized, he sat with me and gently told me the news. He was so caring and compassionate. Dr. Day said to me if I had more questions, I could call his office, and he would return my call and help answer any questions I had. I did have questions, and so did my husband. Dr. DAY HIMSELF responded back very quickly and reviewed another radiologist's notes that I did not understand and then broke everything down for us in a way that explained why my cancer had returned, what it was invading, and the different sizes of each tumor and what the difference is between a cancer and a lesion are. He also explained what areas had scar tissue from my previous radiation and where in my spine the cancer had spread, and he explained why my pain was felt in weird places. I finally found a doctor who didn't look at the clock, dismiss my questions, or make me feel stupid for asking them. He genuinely wanted me to understand how and why my cancer was affecting me and that I understood it all. From this point on, he was the only radiologist that I wanted to read my studies and he also helped me understand why one doctor had missed a tumor early on in my breast cancer journey. I had no idea that things were not as obvious, and some breast cancers can be so subtle they are easily missed in the early stages. He made me understand the human side of medicine and that doctors are not perfect but, yet they try to be and do the best they can for their patients. But radiology studies depend on many variables: the equipment, how the tech is trained or places your body in position, and what angles of specific scans reveal. I felt so much better finally understanding exactly where I had new cancer spots and where the old areas that were treated with radiation had scarred, and some tumors had even calcified and turned into bone. After he took and returned countless calls immediately and gently answered questions I asked. I finally felt at peace with my diagnosis and knew my doctors were doing the best they could. When I asked him why he went into medicine it was he left flying places for the Navy because he saw his loved ones and others get horrible medical treatment and he wanted to understand the human body so he could help them. His father-in-law was also a doctor and that helped him become interested in medicine. I later found out his wife had some unusual health problems and he cared enough to learn all he could about the human body to help her and others like her. Dr. Day us very quiet and some may think he was stuck up but once you get to know him you realize he's just a very quiet, kind and sensitive doctor that truly cares about each and every patient he treats. I have been had a doctor ensure I understood the information and medical jargon or my own diagnosis and take so much time with me answering all of my questions and not once did I feel like I was making him late or taking up too much of his time. I also never felt stupid for asking basic questions that other doctors thought I should have known already. Now after Year's of knowing Dr. Day, he became our family's Radiologist and when one of our grand kids broke a leg or had problems we asked him for a second opinion or if he wouldn't mind looking at the scans, he said of course just drop them bye and I will take a look! He promptly returned calls and messages and slowly over time I regained trust in my other physicians again. He is a family man and often spoke of his children and he always asked after my own family and remembered my husbands name and my children and grandkids' names. He is brilliant, kind and funny. He told my family that his kids would try not to laugh at his bad Dad jokes and would keep scores of good dad jokes and kept scores of bad dad jokes. If you ever have to have a breast biopsy or any other biopsy or radiology procedure ask for Dr. Day, if you ever need a second opinion then he is the best in the Hampton Roads. He is a humble man but one of the smartest doctors I have ever met and you can just tell how he tries to serve all of his patients with care and a keen eye. Thank you Dr. Day for caring and teaching me all about my cancer and reminding me not to give up and explaining why I felt the way I did. You saved me in multiple ways and I will never forget that you cared for little old me!
