Best Thoracic Surgeon
Dr. Schaffer completed my quadruple bypass on Jan. 13, 2025. He and the whole Baylor, Scott & White Heart Hospital team are top shelf! Period. The surgery is a true success. Dr. Schaffer cares about you (me) as a patient that he can help and heal. Great bedside manner. He listens to you and gives nursing staff great direction on a one-on-one approach. Thanks Dr. Schaffer and staff!

Type A aortic dissection
I was transported to BSW in Plano with a Type A aortic dissection for emergency surgery. I was fortunate that Dr Schaffer was the surgeon who performed the DHCA surgery to repair my aorta and aortic valve. Dr Shaffer is highly skilled and had it not been for him and his team, I wouldn't be here today. I only ever spoke to him briefly a couple times after that surgery and a follow up surgery at BSW. If I or a family member were to need a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon again and I had a choice, it would be Dr Schaffer.

I had an abnormal EKG during pre-op for back surgery. Was referred to Legacy Heart Center for further tests. After another failed EKG as well as a Cardio PET stress test I underwent an angiogram by Dr. Sayfo at BSW Heart Hospital Plano. Dr. Sayfo accompanied me back to my room and explained the result and diagrammed the severe blockage. He told my wife and I that a thoracic surgeon would be there shortly to discuss the treatment I would need. Within five minutes Dr. Schaffer came in and introduced himself and two assistants. He said that I needed bypass surgery as soon as it could be scheduled. Understand, I had no symptoms or history so this was all a bit overwhelming. But Dr. Schaffer outlined the expected results. He was kind, caring and professional. He exuded confidence. A week later I underwent successful quadruple bypass surgery. I was in the hospital 4 days. I couldn’t have asked for better care. I would trust my life to Dr. Schaffer without hesitation. He’s the best!

Dr. Schaffer is an amazing surgeon. I had to be operated on by him three weeks in a row (three back to back surgeries) and I was so scared every time they wheeled me to the OR but the fear lessened each time. I would recommend him 100000 times. He has an awesome bedside manner and he explained everything he did or was going to do in detail. He's awesome and he saved my life. Thank you

We love Dr. Schaffer. When dad went into the Baylor heart hospital with chest pains, we were told he had to have a bi-pass surgery. Dr. Schaffer explained the procedure to us, he checked on my dad frequently until his surgery was done the following Tuesday. Him being confident that he would be able to fix my dads heart made all of us feel confident that dad would be ok. Surgery was a complete success. I just thanked God that Dr. Schaffer was the one to fix him. We will forever be grateful.

Dr. Schaffer was called for emergency surgery for my daughter on 4/5 and did the surgery on 4/6. He provided excellent care to her and the whole family. We were all scared and in shock to find what was thought to be something simple was in fact life threatening at any second. Thank God for Dr. Schaffer and the the doctors who referred her to him. He literally saved her from imminent death. He was informative, supportive, and caring during the whole time and we are forever grateful.

Dr Schaffer replaced my bicuspid aortic valve on 1-31-17. After other doctors kept dragging their feet on scheduling the surgery, Dr. Schaffer did the necessary tests to confirm that my symptoms were due to severe aortic stenosis & did the surgery a 1 1/2 wks later. He has a great bedside manner, thoroughly explaining the prob. & procedure & patiently answering all questions. After surgery, he celebrated my successes & calmed my concerns. My husband & I truly believe Dr. Schaffer saved my life
