Dr. Smith is an excellent physician and surgeon. I had one incident in the hospital that was Inexcusable. When I shared the incident with Dr. Smith, he was very willing to listen to what had transpired. He also asked if I wanted to seek assistance with a resolution, and for that, I was appreciative. Overall, with the exception of one unfortunate situation, I was extremely impressed withDr. Smith, his surgical team, his nursing team, his support team, and those involved with my care. Without hesitation, I would most definitely recommend him. UVA and his patients are very lucky to have him.

In contrast to his team, Dr. Smith was very engaged, interactive, welcoming and made me feel like I was listened to and cared about, and he was glad I was there. I do wish he'd asked more of his own questions on top of what the resident/fellow told him as often the attendings ask things in a way that are worded differently than the understudy and can reveal more information that is often very pertinent to patient care. Knowing his level of expertise, I am confident in his approach either way. He did acknowledge my symptoms and need for further imaging. Felt validated and like I was in the good hands I knew I was in.

I highly would recommend Dr. Justin Smith to anyone who would need a neurosurgeon. My father just recently had back surgery by him and he is excellent. Has a very good bed side manner, pays attention to patient detail. He is very knowledgeable and explains it to where you can understand everything. Once my father was done with surgery and was in recovery and had a few minor issues to work out the doctor and his team and the hospitals team where on it.

If you need a spinal fusion there is no one better than Dr. Smith. He fused me fromore S1-T9 and used some spacers in L4-5. He got rid of my back and leg pain and I am walking pain free for the first time in years. I was told by many of my local doctors my procedure was too complex due to adult scoliosis as well. Dr. Smith was confident yet not "cocky" in his assurances he could help me. Well, he did. I'm eternally grateful for everything he has done for me. Also, he's a good person who cares.

In the past 7 years I have had 3 spine surgeries performed by Dr Smith. He has always made sure I understood what the problem was, how he was going to treat it, what to expect during and after recovery and all risks involved not just with performing this type of procedure, but also without it. I have not had any unforeseen problems or surprises with the end result but always exactly as predicted. Very knowledgeable in his field and makes himself available in short amount of time.
