Honestly cares, and you can feel it
Have had both TKAs done now by Dr. Schabel. It was very hard for me as someone in their late 20s to find someone willing to give me what I knew I needed. My first visit with her I broke down in tears because I was so tired of being in so much pain. She held my hand and told me she wanted to help me, and if I wanted to make the choice for my own body to get a TKA at 29 she would be more than happy to help. Just had my second one done last week and both surgical experiences were great. She came in before the operation to check on me and reassure me they were going to take care of me. She looks you in the eye and treats you like a human, which is unfortunately all to rare these days. After the surgery was done and I was out, she personally called my husband to let him know I was out and ok, and that it made her so sad to look inside me knee and see how much damage there was in someone so young. Both knees look great and I recommend her all the time. She’s the absolute best.

Great Surgeon.
Dr. Schabel made my replacement of both left and right knees very tolerable. She explained everything very clearly prior to surgeries. Her bedside manner is the best ever for me. All the staff admires her and my recovery has been a lot easier than I expected. She is at the top of her profession. If you need a knee or hip replacement, I would recommend her without reservation, as well as the hospital OHSU & Adventist and the staff of both. 5 star.

Missing in action
Had a Total knee done by Dr Schabel. Did not do well from start, after a hard 3 months did settle down, but after a year was not right and would blow up and was unable to walk, and was confined to crutches and the couch. Took an act of God to see Dr Schabel and when I did she seemed at a loss for what to do, and just seemed to ignore the problem Never did re- exam me. Finally saw an outside provider who said hardware was loose and I needed a redo. When this was communicated to Dr Schabel she seemed dismissive and acted as if she could not be bothered. Did have the outside physician do the redo and the hardware was so loose it just popped off with any effort. Now 12 weeks after the second surgery and doing well. Can walk and bike and the 2nd recovery was so much easier than the first. I'm not sure what Dr Schabel did initially, but it didn't work and the worst thing is she never seemed to take responsibility or care. I would go elsewhere for your Knee Replacement.

I have had the good fortune to have Dr. Schabel as my surgeon for the replacements of my left knee as well as my right hip. She listens to my issues and involves me in the care plan. She is medically astute and her bedside manner should be emulated by other physicians. As a retired RN, I feel that I have the ability to assess her better than a lay person, and can say candidly that I cannot find fault with anything that I have experienced over the times when I had the two procedures mentioned or during multiple pre-op and follow-up exams. I unequivocally recommend Dr Schabel for her orthopedic expertise.

I’ve worked with physicians for nearly 40 years, so have known many. Dr. Schabel was knowledgeable, thorough, patient with my questions/concerns & very kind. My hip replacement has been life changing & I would repeat it without a concern with Dr. Schabel.

I'm two years post op. I have significantly more pain and discomfort than before my surgery both in my knee and in my back. My back was re-injured during the procedure by surgeon carelessness. Her staff is so afraid of her they block access and deny patient requests. I said from the first appointment that I am not a candidate for spinal anesthesia. On the morning of my surgery I was asked over 20 x's to recount all the bad experiences I had with epidurals. Very traumatic. Poor result.

I highly recommend DrSchabel with whom I had a total knee replacement. She is a skilled surgeon who really listened to my concerns. She used cutting edge pain control, sending me home with a home pump which delivered a numbing agent into the nerve block, She encourages spinal anaesthetic and also used a nerve block for the surgery. The whole team ar OHSU was outstanding.

I find it hard to understand how anyone one would rate Dr. Schabel with less than five stars. If there were a 6th star, I'd give it to Dr. Schabel and her practice. She came highly recommended by her associates and I can see why. I had my right knee replacement done at another hospital more than a decade ago, and I had recovered quickly and been very pleased. It would have been difficult to surpass that experience, but Dr. Schabel did. She has a genuine and kind manner that connected with me

Not a patient focused office. In fact, it's clear that the MA for Dr. Kathryn Schabel is motivated by keeping the office running on time regardless of patient issues. If they can't be kind and empathetic upon check in, then what will they be like to work with on a significant surgery with several weeks of rehabilitation?

She ended up being one of the most uncaring doctors I've ever had. When in terrible pain and discomfort right after surgery while I lie there crying in pain with the rudest most sarcastic attitude behind what she said " just remember you asked me for this surgery " like me feeling like this surgery could really help me had anything to do with the amount of pain after surgery. Also be careful because they'll kick you out before your ready 24 hours after surgery I was in a car on a 3 1/2 hr drive
