Knee Replacement
The doctor did not take out the screws in my knee before he hammered in the Knee Replacement, which caused my need to break the recovery time was extremely long and painful. My knee never did heal. I had to have a second knee replacement with a much larger rod with a new doctor.. very disappointed, horrible recovery. I’m having to have another knee second knee replacement because of the failure of taking out the rods in my knee. This is the worst experience in my life. he deserves zero stars, but if I don’t give him one star, they will not submit the review

Dr. Merkel abruptly retired without notifying anyone of his plans. While I don't begrudge him his hard-earned retirement, I felt like I was left high and dry when I needed him for routine follow-up on previous surgeries (years ago - not recent) and to refill a prescription. He replaced 2 hips for me as well as restored a torn meniscus and I was very happy with the results. Just not too happy how he up and left without notifying his patients in advance.

I had bilateral knee joint replacements from Dr Merkel in September 2018. One year later I had the desired outcomes of greater mobility and freedom from knee pain. I was unlucky in acquiring a post-surgical infection, which cost a lot of time and energy, but the infection was dealt with efficiently and assiduously, both surgically and medically. The infection rates for double knee replacements are not substantially different from those of sequential replacements or individual ones. My final outcome is very good.

Friends have often told horror stories about getting a cortisone shot. Over the years I have gotten 3 shots from Dr. Merkel, the last today. There has never been any after shot pain the day of the shot much less for days after. Because of his skill in administering the shot, the pain that necessitated it begins to lessen within hours. Dr. Merkel also does not tend to rush one into having surgical procedures if there is a possibility of a non-surgical solution.
