I was referred to this doctor by my ophthalmologist. I have never been so mistreated by an entire office staff- from Lucy Chen on down. When I scheduled the appointment I was on hold twice for 15 minutes each time. I was 15 minutes early for a 10:10AM appointment and was kept waiting for 40 minutes. My insurance called them 1 hour prior to my appointment and confirmed all I had to do was pay the $10 expert co-fee. The office manager refused to submit my insurance paper work and finally agreed to submit it, 'but just one time only'. Lucy saw me for 5 minutes. She pressured me to use her office's optician services. She was extremely annoyed I preferred my optician. A few days later I called for a follow-up appointment. The staff refused to schedule an appointment and hung up even though I agreed to pay any uncovered fees for out of network services. In my opinion, Chen and her staff were clear they did not want a patient in her sixties.

They have not considered my Cigna insurance and made me pay $282.80 for the physician visit/eye exam for my son. I informed them my plan would only want me to pay a copay of $35 and remaining would be covered by the insurance. They made me wait for next 30 minutes saying they would need that time to verify and came back saying that I have to pay the said amount. I also offered I need time to talk to Cigna and get it sorted out or asked them to raise a claim and let me visit the Doctor. For which I was bluntly told, If not paid I can not visit the Doctor. So seeing no way out I paid $282.80 and visited the Doctor Lucy. Doc is fine, hardly spent 10 minutes and thats ok. now the horrible part is after making me pay the $282.80, the hospital has raised a claim for the same amount with Cigna and got a check payment of $247.80 and patient responsibility of $35. So I have to pay $35 more after paying $282.80. And guess what, $247.80 + $35 is the exact amount I have paid, $282.80 VOILA.

Sparta office - NOPE
NOPE NOPE NOPE! I waited 2 months for an appointment and then when I was 5 mins away and they called me to tell me I needed a referral to come in. I NEVER needed a referral before, my son goes to the eye Dr every year. When I asked why she called me 5 mins before my appointment she said "Normally we don't call anyone so we are doing you a favor."

Just brought my son for exam upon recommendation from Facebook group. Office is very nice. Temperature taken socially distanced seating and everyone maser and gloved. Dr Chen was very kind and her efficient. She was able to get so much information on my wiggly 2 yr old. I have no hesitation recommending her

Dr Chen cares for 3 of my children. She diagnosed an optic disorder on my daughter and was so helpful in getting her treated. She called to make sure everything was ok. She is very experienced and caring. You can’t go wrong

Dr Chen operated on my daughter for an eye muscle problem and my daughters eyes are perfect. She was highly recommended by pediatrician and I can see why. Waiting times can be sometimes a little long but Dr. Chen is worth the wait.

Waste of time. Staff made us an appointment for our autistic son. Group home took him along with his father. After finding the office they said they would not see him for a routine check up even though he has a complicated history with his eyes. The doctor's office was very rude and had no patience for our son and his disability. Would never recommend this doctor ever.

Never met her but already know I wouldn’t recommend. Had an 8:50 AM appointment for my 14 mo old son, took us up at 9:15, then proceeded to wait another hour before seeing doc. Kid fell asleep! Completely disrespectful. I’ve never met you, and this is the first impression you want to leave? Luckily, the Internet has solutions for disgraceful people like this. If you value your time, do not go here. They obviously don’t value it.

We brought our child for a second opinion to Dr. Chen. She was so knowledgeable and help us understand our son's vision issue. We will definitely continue with her and bring our other kids to her in the future.

I’m surprised to read bad reviews. Mr daughter started seeing Dr. Chen when she was 14 months old.. she is now 11. We’ve had nothing but great experiences from the front end to the doctors. Dr. Chen is kind, patient and definitely the best pediatric eye Dr. around.

No one in this practice has any patience or empathy for a scared young child, and Dr. Chen has zero tolerance for a child that moves even the slightest inch during an exam. The staff is rude and wait times are terrible.

Don’t bother!!!The office staff is horrible! After waiting 30 minutes, the receptionist finally checked me in and decided to “break the news” that even though I have $0 copay with my excellent insurance there is still a deductible and they bill in advance so I had to cough up $400 before seeing the doctor. No one told me this little detail before and I dragged 4 kids in the snow to this appointment that I walked out of!!! And to boot the parking situation is atrocious!

Dr. Chen seemed fine at first, but after some questionable advice and unclear rational I requested her notes and consulted other doctors for clarity. We found errors in her measurements and ultimately poor treatment of my daughter’s condition. The office staff made errors with medical billing as well resulting in insurance appeals. It was an overall poor experience and I do not recommend this doctor or office.

While Dr. Chen was pleasant enough, her medical feedback was generic and her horrendous office staff therefor makes this a recommendation to AVOID. They harassed for payment upfront, swatted checking patients aside, clearly double booked and then shoved papers to be signed that appeared to be violations of information. Rude and offensive.

We first started taking our children to Dr. Chen 10 years ago, when we had concerns about our child's habit of watching tv from as far away as possible or her nose to the screen. She was wonderful. She answered my questions, was gentle with my over-stimulated child, and was able to give us a diagnosis and prescribe glasses. When my second child was born, I mentioned in passing something I had noted about my newborn, and Dr. Chen requested I bring her in on her first birthday. She needed glasses.

She's takes her time when you're in the room with her. Sounds knowledgeable and easy to talk to. Her office and staff is a different story. They book multiple people for the same time slot so you end up waiting an hour to be seen past your appointment time. What's the point of telling me to be early when you have me waiting there for an hr anyway. Staff is rude on the phones and no different in person.

Dr. Chen is very nice and courteous. She is very knowledgeable and listens to questions and answers them patiently. I trust Dr. Chen 100%. The office staff is sometimes rude, sometimes curt. Trying to schedule an appointment is difficult. Have been put on hold for 15 minutes and had to hang up and call back only to be placed back on hold. Have been overcharged many times but when you call them they cut out a check pretty quickly.
