amazing doctor
When he first came to f'burg he diagnosed a pituitary tumor on a co-workers daughter that was wreaking havoc on her body and no one else she had been to had gone any further to figure out why a person in their 20's (best I remember) had so many health issues. They just treated her for all the resulting problems. He changed her and her families life. Since then my husband and now myself have see Dr Mcclanahan and he has helped every time. He takes time to discuss things with you and explain things. He listens to what you have to say. He also keeps up on new medical information. Another plus is that this is a private practice not owned by Mary Washington.

Horrible experience!
My husband, who is on a fixed income, arrived for his very first ever visit and was immediately told if he didn't pay his co-pay of $20, he would not be seen. All of his other doctors have always billed us, so he wasn't prepared to pay out of pocket at that time. There was no resolution by the front desk staff, nor the doctor--my husband was just told if he didn't pay it now, he needs to leave! He had to leave without an opportunity for diabetes care at all.

Can't Get Past The Gatekeeper
I'd love to be able to review the doctor, but we couldn't get past the gatekeeper on the phone. Although they are listed in the TRICARE directory as "in-network" and "accepting new patients," we were told that they are not. And the person on the phone called me "Honey." That's just plain unprofessional.

My visit was fine, but the billing is antiquated and the female at the billing office is rude and will not protect your personal information. Dr. McClanahan won’t even take the time to hear a patients concerns, he just dismisses them.

I have been a patient of Dr. McClanahan's since moving to Virgina in 2016. I find him to be friendly, taking the time to listen & to fully explain everything. The wait times are reasonable, never long at all , the staff are all very nice, friendly & helpful. Judy Scoma in Fredericksburg, Va. - July 26, 2020

Dr. McClanahan is excellent but some of his office staff are a bit rude at times. The billing number at the site is incorrect but the office explained that it was not their responsibility to correct it though I had left messages for weeks over a billing issue.

Dr. McClanahan treated me like I was insurance paperwork and lab results. He refused to conduct labs I requested that are recommended for Hashi patients. I also asked about a newer approach to which he responded he only considered reputable sources. I pointed out that NIH had conducted the study and instead of admitting his error and exploring the research he blew me off. His office didn't follow up with lab work results which showed that I had extremely low Vit D levels.

This office actually wrote me a letter stopping my service with them when I am on a medication that Dr. McClanahan started me on, Qysmia, that is supposed to have a step down and not just a complete stop in medication. I find that unethical and would never recommend him to anyone. Even if you are stopping service you should ensure you are not endangering someone medically. He seems nice in person but I think he likes his money too much. I am an educated engineer, who thought I was getting help.

We will not recommend Dr. McClanahan. We were unable to get an appointment due to issues with our paperwork. Our referring doctor's office sent the paperwork to Dr. Callahan's office. The staff does not take the time to follow up referrals to help patients receive the care they need. We understand they are busy with people who self refer or new cases. But to show lack of empathy and not care about a patient following up their paperwork is upsetting. So we are going to another doctor.
