General anesthesia administered to Dementia patien
Husband with primary progressive aphasia with anger admitted toLancaster General for Right kneeReplacement under Dr Carl Becker. On 9-30-24 dr Bell interviewed patientAnd myself pre-op. I respectfully Requested an epidural instead of generalAnesthesia. Dr Bell stated that the surgeon preferred general. I asked if itWould be possible to make an exception Due to the dementia and possibleUntoward effects of general post op.The doctor said there is no evidenceThat post op psychosis follows general. He then proceeded to ask the patient if he wanted a needle in his spine or a Small mask over his face. The patientSaid don’t touch my spine. The doctor Then proceeded to record that the patient requested general anesthesia.Upon recovery the patient was practically unmanageable and agitated. He was in turmoil and needed to haveOne on one supervision to prevent himFrom falling due to insistence onLeaving hospital. Previous surgeries haveNever prompted this behavior.
