I would give zero stars if it were possible. Our father was a patient of Dr. Metzger’s for 15 years until his death on March 4th.While we understand that he had advanced heart and kidney failure, he was also leading a very active lifestyle and tolerating dialysis well. Unfortunately, Dr. Metzger is one of those doctors that allocate “x” many minutes for each patient, whether they are done asking questions or not, and is just not appropriately engaged. Its all about banging his patients out for the office visit, checking whatever boxes need to be checked, and moving on to the next exam room. He has zero skin in the game, which is very disappointing given that he’s a cardiologist and the heart is a rather critical organ. Examples of his non-engagement would be sending our father off for a pacemaker swap out and having zero, let me reiterate – zero, follow-up with the doctor he sent him to for the procedure. Very poor care coordination to say the least. He told our father about an “off-label” valve clip that Dr. George Daniel would do, however the maker of the clip did not approve the procedure so different options were pursued. We were then told mid-January about clinical trial in Miami for tricuspid valve clip and sent through a whole 2 week process only to find out due to dialysis he was excluded from study. My sister is a nurse and had been in contact with Dr. Metzger and when she texted him this news his response back was “oh that sucks.” That’s some great professionalism from a cardiologist. Why didn’t Dr. Metzger know that dialysis patients were excluded? Just another example of lack of engagement and our father’s hopes were needlessly inflated, only to be deflated because his cardiologist doesn’t know or care about very basic requirements for a procedure he’s recommending to a patient! His only comment prior to our father’s exclusion was “we are handling everything and all we had to do is show up." This was not the case. All along, our father was set up with a home blood pressure testing system which transmitted his daily readings directly to Dr. Metzger. Wouldn’t you think someone from the office or perhaps even Dr. Metzger himself would have taken note that his BP was in 70s-80's/40's-50's and the only way to get it up is for him to eat salty food? Dr. Metzger then directed him to eat Chinese food which then blew him up fluid wise to the point that he had trouble breathing and could barely walk because his knees were so swollen. Our father was on a medication to raise his BP however that wasn't working and so that should have been a major cue to Dr. Metzger that he was not responding to the medical treatment and would not be able to tolerate a surgery, however instead of having an honest discussion with him he then proceeded to prescribe 'Chinese food' as a way to raise the BP?? Clues are only effective when there is engagement. What good is a home monitoring system when nobody is monitoring the data?! Dr. Metzger then jerked our father around for the final time regarding a just approved transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement surgery in Naples. Our father got his hopes back up again, as we all did, however the day before he died we met with Dr. Gustavo Cardenas an interventional cardiologist from Dr. Metzger’s team who told us that any type of clip/valve repair even done via minimally invasive procedure would be "impossible" and "would have been impossible" due to his persistent hypotension. He would have to have BP consistently up over 100 systolic which he hadn't had for months! In the end, our father suffered needlessly for several months with his symptoms including the very uncomfortable regurgitation of valve fluid while hanging on for a "fix" for this valve when there was no feasible fix due to his overall condition and his cardiologist who had all of his data never said a word! We were sent on different wild goose chases in several different directions adding much stress/pressure onto us his family on top of his suffering - when if his cardiologist was just honest and engaged, our father would have been able to make proactive decisions in terms of palliative/hospice care because he had said his symptoms were not manageable to live like that. Dr. Metzger, plain and simple is simply not someone to trust with your cardiac care. He's the teflon cardiologist.

Excellent doctor
Dr. Metzger reads all your records before seeing you so he is updated on your past and present history He listens to you and explains what your situation is without talking down to you. I feel I was very lucky to find him and have him as my doctor. My only complaint I could have is the wait time to see him, as the practice is so busy. But I would rather have a doctor that’s in demand than one with limited patients

Excellent care. Recommended
It’s a very busy practice so sometimes patience is required. However, the doctor and professional staff are superb. For over 30 years I’ve been treated for cardio issues in California, the Northeast and the last decade in South Florida. I feel very fortunate to have Dr. Metzger and his staff there for me now. No reservations about recommending him.

One of the best
Dr Metzger listens to you. He doesn’t rush you out and that is important to me. I also like that he doesn’t over prescribe . By that i mean he doesn’t test you every year which i always felt was unnecessary . He remembers little details about you and always seems concerned. I have been seeing him for many years and have recommended him to many people. I rank him #1 !
