Good doctor but practice is going downhill
I've been a patient of Dr. Patel for several years, and I would have given her the most positive rating, but the practice has devolved into a factory. They run you through as quickly as possible, and Dr. P. doesn't listen as closely as she used to. It's extremely difficult to get an appointment, or even to get someone on the phone--you'll be put on hold forever. Even as a long-standing patient experiencing difficulties, the next appointment was 3 months away. I have to wait 2 months even to be seen by the PA. Am looking for a more responsive and attentive GI doc.

I was very nauseous when I arrived for my colonoscopy. Because Gastro Health seems to be more business than medical, the anti-nausea medicine was added to the IV too late to take effect. I was on the table, on my side with the oxygen going in my nose when I started vomiting. Someone handed me a tissue. I remember wiping the vomit off my nose and mouth and then using the blanket when the tissue was soaked. Someone did blot at the vomit, but there was a lot of it. The procedure continued, and I had vomit on my gown, me, and the sheet when I woke up. I also told the anesthesiologist that I had problems with anesthesia, but nothing was done. I could barely stand or walk for quite a while. Even the next day and a half I felt the effects of the drugs.

Went to Patel because she showed 4 stars but I was very disappointed, didn't get the 4-star treatment. During my procedure, I felt like a number. No conversation that made me feel comfortable during the procedure. I had to wait for the lab report so I could read it and found out that there was a concern. I questioned the results and was told to continue my regiment, I had to reach out and ask what regiment. This led me to believe they responded without reading my chart. Then when I asked a question about the regiment on the portal I never got a response. Web portals are a great system to communicate if they are used. I hope she changes and starts treating her patient like she would like to be treated.

While Dr. Patel was very patient and listened to what I said, she didn't follow through. I asked that a copy of the pathology report be sent to me, but it never was. When I called the office to get a copy I opted for the nurse. My call was sent to the scheduler. I don't think the scheduler qualifies as a nurse. When I was given an option to put my message in a voice mailbox, I found that the mailbox was full. Dr. Patel did re-prescribe a $1,200 medicine for me in spite of the fact that she said that she would try to find a less expensive Rx. She did not suggest that I schedule a follow up visit with her after I finished taking the medicine. I found my entire experience with this practice poor.

Dr Patel took the time to listen and to educate. Great bedside manners, comforting doctor and thorough explanation. I live an hour away from Reston but it’s totally worth the trip. Best gastro by far I’ve seen in Washington DC area.
