Dr. Nicholas Lannen, MD

It’s not very often you find a doctor who is humble, respectful, and goes above and beyond to explain risks and benefits. I began thoroughly researching my condition after I got diagnosed, and rather than criticize me for using “doctor Google”, he was highly supportive. We’ve talked about more advanced mitigation of certain comorbities, some fatal, and he will sit and talk with you over your appointment time if sees you’re in distress. When I tried to enroll in a clinical trial, he was highly responsive to both myself and the trial coordinator, and sat down to explain all the risks and benefits. He hasn’t ever talked down to me, disregarded my issues, and he is probably one of the most intelligent people I’ve ever had the pleasure of speaking to. He responds most of the time within 30 minutes, despite his patient load, even to innocuous questions like, “Is there a way to see if my kids will get this?” And lastly, he is very patient with late arrivals, I get there and it’s all good.

His PA is great but he dictates treatment, doesn't listen well, or offer solutions. Stood across the room with his arms folded, told me what he wanted, not what I asked, ordered an MRI and didn't even contact me with the results, my PCP did. I sent him questions and he never answered. He was more concerned with treating my headaches except I wasn't there for that.

Dr. Lannen is an interesting fellow. He's probably the smartest guy in the building (sorry, everyone else I'm sure you do great work) and is very To The Point, which if you want to be eased into ideas or have your back rubbed while talking to a doctor this is not the guy for you. He will however, tell you what you need to hear to your face without fluff and will entertain your arguments with him if they are logical, and even make concessions if it means you do most of what he says. It's clear he has a specialty and a soft spot for auto-immune conditions and if that's what you are there for, you are in good hands. Corewell health should really put a poster of him on the wall. Personally, I can't think of a more memorable doctor I've ever seen (for better or worse.)

Doctor addressed all my questions and recommended treatment plan was in line with my expectations.

Poor communication

He burst into the room like he was in a hurry and never even made eye contact with my husband or myself. He recommended I perform such generic issues that did not pertain to me. He said I should hydrate, start exercising daily, eat a healthy diet. Which if he looked at my chart I do all of these things already and have been documenting my health habits in a daily journal to help find a pattern to some of my health issues. Put me on a medication for pain which I was not experiencing any, and out the door he went! The P.A that I saw listened to me and was wonderful, she was the only reason I agreed to go on the medication. I don't know that he could have told me my name.

Dr Lannen does a complete exam on me to determine my MS impact on my physical abilities.

Good

I was told that another patient had shown up early, so there would be a delay in my appointment. I thought that it would be maybe 15 minutes, but I was in the exam room for over an hour before the doctor arrived. I do understand that doctors are busy, but I was a little surprised that Dr. Lannen didn't even apologize for such a lengthy wait time. I almost left because I had other commitments to make but I was afraid that I'd get charged for the visit!
