Bad treatment years ago, but still bothers me
I was in the ER for vomiting and pain. The Dr in the ER begrudgingly sent me for a CT which showed a small bowel obstruction. A resident came in at the behest of this "Dr" and was initially very nice. Kunkel decided that my issue was NOT a SBO but an STI. Had an ObGyn come in and do a test (in my ROOM, w/another patient in the room, just a curtain separating us) which turned out to be NEGATIVE - as I had said it would be - but the attitude of the resident and nurses significantly changed after this "Dr" decided on a whim what it was. He never came to my room or discussed anything with me, nor did he apologize for making such an abhorrent diagnosis - which was an incorrect diagnosis. I would do everything in my power to not have to deal with him or his practice.

Dr Kunkle performed an emergency appendectomy on me. He and his team made me very comfortable with their warm and friendly greeting and introduction. Just like a blink of an eye I was in a recovery room. That is all I remember! I stayed the night and had very good care. Due to to movable bed I did not require any pain meds at any time. At home I can feel pain when straining to get out of bed. I praise the effort of Dr. Kunkel, his team and hospital team to make my stay comfortable. (I must add that I left with a better looking belly button than what I had.)

Dr. Kunkel was clear and straightforward with a personable bedside manner that put me at ease in a tense time. His goal was to get me well and home, with surgery not being his go-to decision.

I saw Dr. Kunkel 1/02/2020, for a left inguinal hernia. During the initial visit Dr. Kunkel said the Laparoscopic surgery and Da Vinci surgeries are the same. They are not. He never explained the difference. We, together, decided on lap surgery. Five minutes before surgery, I hear him saying to the OR tech to prepare the Da Vinci room. I call him in my pre op room and tell him we decided on the lap surgery. He reiterates cocky, the surgeries are the same. (I feel he wanted to use me as a guinea pig because of my age.} I had the Da Vinci surgery. After surgery he tells me surgery went well. A had severe pain and extensive ecchymosis and swelling,, . My incision was made above my umbilicus. (I later found out that the configuration of the Da Vinci requires the incision above the umbilicus). Which he never mentioned. I went back for my post op visit. Little did I know that a complication of Da Vinci was a hernia above the incision site. Dr. Kunkel never looked at my abdomen

He gave me the option for two different types of surgery but did very little to explain the the pros and con's . Had to repeat the surgery a year later because first surgery failed . When he came in to the room to see me for the faied surgery he had a female intern with him, felt like he was more about impressing her then addressing me.

I was there for a consultation for a hernia not a weight loss discussion about my family. My husband and I felt he was rude and inconsiderate didn't even offer to run an ultrasound or MRI to see how bad the hernia was. Told me I need to lose 50 pounds and need to see a nutritionist and get weight loss surgery. The funny thing is his nutritionist is booked for the next 2 months so I'm suppose to lose 50 pounds or no surgery. I would not recommend this Dr and I won't be going back...
