Dr. Philip Kim, MD

My recent experience with Dr. Kim has been very positive. Dr. Kim not only is a skilled surgeon with up-to-date knowledge and skills but also a caring physician who can look into problems from a patient's perspective. After some attempts by other doctors, Dr. Kim was the one who first figured out the source of my hematuria that lasted a few months. Dr. Kim's finding led to a later diagnosis of a fast-grown malignant tumor in my ureter. He did all he could, arranged and performed a ureterectomy at an earliest possible date. Before the surgery, Dr. Kim held a number of consultation sessions with me and my family. He was patient and did an excellent job in explaining to us what to expect during and after the surgery. After the surgery, as soon as he received the pathology results, he reached out to us and carefully went through the results with us. Overall, my family and I are very grateful for all that Dr. Kim and the team have done for us. I feel lucky to have Dr. Kim as my surgeon.

Dr. Kim is a rockstar in San Diego Urology. I am a patient that tracks my health metrics closely and that takes responsibility for my own health. First, Dr. Kim is very engaged in his field of urologic oncology. He is passionate about urology medicine and curing his patients. He has a support team that is equally committed. Second, he listens to me. I have had other Kaiser doctors roll their eyes when I spoke about medical matters that I had researched. Dr. Kim didn't. I sent Dr. Kim material, not just studies but a book, and then asked him about it later. He had read the book I sent him, and was able to discuss its subject matter with some detail. Third, he's a smart guy and is able to draw logical conclusions from the data that presents itself based upon not just his experience, his substantial independent review of literature, but mathematical probability. I've dealt with Kaiser for decades. Dr. Kim is exceptional and if he's on your chart you are in good hands

Where does Kaiser find these urologists? They act like they are doing you a favor by taking time to discuss your conditions and treatment options. Dr. Kim gave me different information than other Kaiser doctors which was also not consistent with information from national care guidelines I have researched about my condition. It seems like his recommendations were more about saving Kaiser money than the best options for my care. I will never recommend Kaiser to anyone after my experiences with this department. Other departments and things about Kaiser are great. Urology…absolutely not good at all. But, because it’s Kaiser, I’m stuck with them.
