Our father was admitted to the ER and had a stroke. ER staff indicated he was dying and admitted him for end of life care. We were confused when less than 12 hours later Missy, the RN case manager, told us he was being discharged. We asked how that could be and she said based upon Dr. A’s assessment, his vitals improved, so he would be discharged. We told her the ER staff told us otherwise and her response was, “I don’t know why they told you that. They don’t always know.” Dr. A made this assessment prior to laying eyes on my dad and was relying on info from nearly 10 hours earlier. She sent Dr. A to speak with us and he again explained his vitals were stable and death is not imminent. We told him we didn’t agree and we’re unable to meet his care needs at home. Dr. A said he understood, but since he was “stable” and there’s “no indication he’s at end of life stages”, staying in the hospital was not appropriate. Dad died less than 24 hours later in the hospital.
