Bad outcome
I had laparoscopic gallbladder surgery 18 months ago and got a nick on my auxiliary bile duct which leaked bile into my body cavity. I was then transferred to Bismarck to have a stent placed at the end of the bile duct to enable the nick to heal. I returned for a follow-up visit to have the drain tube removed and at the suggestion of my sister and her husband (her a nurse and her husband a physician) asked if I should be put on an antibiotic. Dr Thompson said he saw no need for that. Fast forward 2 weeks; I was transported to ER by ambulance and informed that I had a large abscess where my gallbladder used to be which was leaking into my bloodstream and that I was in septic shock. I was airlifted to Fargo and was hospitalized for 10 days. Plus 2 weeks of daily antibiotic infusions after I’m home. Fargo Dr’s said bile is terribly full of bacteria and anytime it’s out of its designated tubes you have problems. I had kidney failure (temporary) and a type 2 heart attack.
