Well worth the wait...and exceptional.
Seen for initial consult, then prostate biopsy, and then treatment planning appointment for pending prostatectomy. The first several visits were brief and focused (and not chatty); the 3rd appointment to discuss the pathology report, treatment options, etc. was ~25 minutes and thorough, thoughtful, and compassionately delivered. He is clearly extremely bright, data driven, yet a bit 'folksy' and so easy to talk to. Yes -- he tends to run late to most appointments -- and it's largely a function of spending additional time with patients when there are significant findings and-or treatment plans to discuss. (No need to get to the appointment early!). Extremely glad to have been referred to him. His office staff and nurses and NP are excellent as well.

I had a great check up at Dr. Carey’s Office
The doctor was very kind and compassionate, and it was a great visit, and somebody finally acts like he cares. Very thorough and very professional.

No thanks
He is more interested in bragging about his degrees than he is in caring for his patients. Wait times are ridiculously long.

Caring, Sensitive, Skilled Surgeon
Dr. Carey performed a radical prostatectomy using the DaVinci robotic equipment to remove an aggressive high grade cancerous tumor . Based on my diagnosis after a biopsy he recommended the removal of the prostate as providing the best chance of survival during the next 15 years. He discussed all the options for treatment but none provided a cure to the type of cancer I experienced except removal.Dr. Carey has performed more than 4,000 of these procedures during the last several years. Following surgery I was told I was cancer free. Follow up visits to check the PSA levels are scheduled every 3 months to be sure there is no recurrence and if so to deal with it. The most challenging side effects continue to be some minor leakage problems and addressing erectile issues. I would recommend Dr. Carey to any patient with a rapidly increasing PSA or high PSA level. Had my cancer not been discovered at the time it likely would have spread to other organs within a relatively short duration.

Dr. Carey appears to be a talented surgeon but has no interest in his patients’ wellbeing. In my case his part of surgery appears to have worked quite well but there has been a mistake during the surgery that led to massive blood loss. The loss of blood manifested itself during recovery and continued for two days after the procedure itself. Yet, Dr. Carey and along with him all physicians at Sarasota Memorial Hospital showed almost no interest. Dr. Carey told my wife after the procedure that "there was almost no blood loss" and he told me the next morning that the surgery "succeeded in a spectacular way". Yet after 5 days in hospital in Sarasota I had to go to emergency room in another hospital where they detected a massive blood clot. Recovery has been long and painful and continued for months after Carey’s procedure. As a result of Dr. Carey’s lack of interest in patient care his staff behaves the same: long waiting times his scheduler will misinform and outright lie to you.

I had a bladder lift procedure by Dr Carey. He must have hit a nerve during the operation since I was in severe pain. He came in for a minute during my post op and suggested I be admitted to Sarasota Memorial. I never saw him again. I was in the hospital for four days. Only saw a. physician assistant. Was discharged on Christmas Eve. I went to my primary Care Dr Enas Sallam and accurately diagnosed me and put me on Gabapentin. I would strongly discourage any one from using Dr Carey for your urinary problem.

Dr. Carey performed a Rezum procedure on me that was a complete disaster. He was late starting and rushed thru the procedure without uttering a single word. He left immediately and his assistant rushed thru the explanation on how catheter worked. After the procedure I had two bouts with urinary tract infections. I would be very concerned about using him. I am going to another urologist for 2nd opinion on what occurred.

My doctor is Robert Carey. I had 3 appointments during March 2020. He seems competent but the office staff is dysfunctional. The office on Waldemere St is always crowded with 15-25 people in the waiting room filling most of the seating. It seems like a third world clinic. The appointments are never on time usually 60 minutes late and the office staff show no concern about patient satisfaction. I had a recent follow up appointment which I wanted to schedule as a telephone call because of coronavirus safety. I called the office days in advance to schedule. The operator said she would leave a message for the nurse and she would get back to me. She didn't and I missed the appointment. And no one from the office ever followed up. My advice - find another urologist.

Arrived for a 2 PM appointment. At 2:45 PM I inquired and was told I would be next to be called back to a room. At 3:25 PM I asked to have my entire record mailed to my home as apparently in 40 minutes the Doctor was unable to clear even one patient. I will find another Doctor who is interested in patient care and not collecting office visit fees. Dr. Carey may be a good doctor but he is an over booker who cannot service the patients he professes to care for.

So far my experience with the doctor has been excellent. The wait issues that some of the others have indicated are not at all unusual for any kind of doctor or dentist in this area. He worked me in because my situation was very acute, took time to answer my questions and was very caring.

Dr. Carey is everything I was looking for in a surgeon. He really listened to my questions and concerns and gave me clear answers. He was willing to spend as much time with me as I needed. He is kind. He talked to my wife and me like people and not like just another "case". It was tough to get an appointment with him because of his reputation as a top urologist in Sarasota. When three other doctors recommended him, I knew he was the right doctor for me. And the surgery was a complete success.

Dr. Carey is an exceptional physician. He listened to my concerns, developed and executed a medical/ surgical option flawlessly. He did not rush me into a surgery option. Yet, when surgery became the only viable option, his skills as a surgeon were evident by my complete recovery without complications 10 days after surgery. He is a gifted surgeon and a compassionate human.

I had my first appointment with Dr. Carey today, and it will be my last. He was one hour and five minutes late to see me. He never apologized or explained why he was late; rather, he told me that he was a better doctor than others, including colleagues in his office. He was rude. He spent approximately ten minutes with me. When he was done he simply walked out the door. Obviously a man who was never socialized.
