RUN AWAY, fast and far.
Just about everything was bad. My 4-level lumbar fusion and laminectomy FAILED. Post op pain so bad, I stayed in hospital an extra day. Mattresses and nurse support at Penrose were the worst. Further complaints of pain were answered with “See your pain doc. We are done.” PT was too aggressive and started too soon. 1 cage infiltrated into the bone and had to be cut out even though I was told it was ok. Should have done ALIF but he did TLIF. I suspect there was no vascular surgeon available to do ALIF. Other 2 cages failed. 4 of 8 screws failed. I had severe pain and immobility for a year until I could get revision surgery. Second surgery removed and replaced all hardware plus added some new. So far so good. I highly recommend Phillip York at Panorama Orthopedic in Golden.

9 days of runaround, never saw the doctor
In spite of having 2 brain tumors, this doctors office gave me the run around for 9 days. I talked to them, at least, 10 times and my primary did 3 times. I finally gave up and am now starting over with Neurosurgeon in Denver. Where is the empathy in these people?

Fantastic
During my initial consultation, Dr Hammers explained my options and answered all of my questions. We talked through my concerns and agreed upon our go forward plan. I was in excruciating pain for months and he fixed it. He executed my surgery so well, that I was pain free and walking around the afternoon of the surgery. I would highly recommend him to anyone with nerve related issues.

Egotistical
Before you judge someone, try talking to them not at them. I have never been more insulted by a doctor as I was with you. Telling me you don't know what kind of privileged family I come from because I own a horse??? All you cared about were how many MRI's, I have had (yes you counted as you said) and that I only had some arthritis in my back. You did not ask how long I have been living with this pain which by the way is more than the arthritis, I can also read the MRI's and I did not just walk in Penrad for the heck of it and ask for an MRI - MY DOCTOR ORDERED IT. You were 45 minutes late for my appointment because we could hear you in the room next door lecturing the other person. Then you come in with a trainee who stayed huddled in the corner. I could not get a word in because you had already judged me and my life. TRY LISTENING TO YOUR PATIENT and leave your ego at the door. By the way, I was working in the tobacco farms at 10 years old - does that sound privileged??

Grateful
Dr. Hammers was on call at Penrose hospital 2 weekends ago. My mom had to have emergency surgery and he was called in. Dr. Hammers was direct and helpful when describing the procedure and potential outcomes. The information was not easy to hear, and his compassion made all the difference. Praise God we had a positive outcome, and I will be forever grateful for Dr. Hammers. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Dr. Hammers is amazing. In light of a very difficult diagnosis of glioblastoma, he listened to our concerns. He was straight forward with treatment options and did not “invalidate” previous treatment decisions. Thank You to Dr. Hammers in this very difficult time. Thank you for your patience. Your patients need to appreciate you as much as we do!

We wish we could give Dr Hammers and his staff more than five stars! Rich is fighting cancer and after radiation his spine was collapsing. He was in a wheelchair and crawling. Dr Hammers fused and decompressed his L3 spine and after three months he is walking and just walked a mile today! How do we thank Dr Hammers for his skill and for giving Rich the ability to walk again? Words just don’t seem to be adequate. Hands down, BEST Dr and staff we have ever had the pleasure of meeting!

My brother was admitted with a tbi. This Dr told us he was brain dead and told us he would not have a chance at a normal life. Well my brother woke up after a week of being in a coma and Is progressing. He saved my brothers life without even realizing it.

Here I am almost three years post-op (May 30, 2018) and I continue to refer to Dr. Hammers as my hero. I will always think of him with gratitude. He gave me a meaningful life when I was sure I would never be able to move without pain. At 70 years of age, I continue to stand straight, do not have pain, and will always remember that Dr. Hammers gave me what he promised on my first visit; hope.

I just want to say that Dr. Ronald Hammers of Colorado Springs Neurological Associates (CSNA) – and my friend Beth Harmon, who was a PA in his office at the time – really saved my life when I contracted an infection in the bones of my thoracic spine in March 2019. He took my case at the recommendation of a friend -- a PA in his office -- when he had no obligation to do so. In July of that year he performed surgery on my spine -- a very touchy and tenuous surgery about which he expressed a degree of anxiety and concern, but which he carried off beautifully and without a hitch. That was a year ago and I’m doing well. Dr. Hammers is clearly one of the best and most knowledgeable practitioners in his field, and I couldn’t recommend him more highly. For me, he was a heaven-sent angel at a time of desperate need.

In fairness, Dr Hammers finalized my "discharge" only for a (retired) Dr Brown successful 4/5 fusion operation. He dismissed me as soon as he walked in the room, pronouncing me healed. Although noted by Dr Brown, no further investigation (CTscan?) was ordered to monitor the healing of my pre-ostheoparosis back/hips. He seemed annoyed by my medical questions, saying "you are not my patient".....

Phenomenal team!!! Dr Hammers & PA are the best!!! My surgery went great, my healing went great!! I knew when I woke up in recovery I was 'fixed'. 2 Titanium replacement discs relieved me of the pain I had experienced for over 5 years. I would highly recommend to anyone with neck issues!! Thank you for giving me my life/livelihood back!!!

Dr Hammers didn't see the bigger picture when diagnosing my lumbar trouble and so only did about half of what was actually needed, in essence misdiagnosing the issue. After the surgery he left me sitting up, in pain, for 8 hrs until I complained. His post-op nurses then we're upset with me for going over their head. They had only checked on me a few times and they just wanted to go home. They mistakenly thought mine was an outpatient surgery. Very bad communications among his team, and a poorly run facility. Had to have the procedure done again by a competent surgeon who said the work that Dr Hammers had done was good but was not all that was needed. Dr Hammers is an inexperienced surgeon with an inflated opinion of his skills and an ego to match.

I wanted no part of neurosurgery! I was afraid of it. But my sciatic nerve told me to forget my fear and just go for it, so I sought out Dr. Hammers as he was highly recommended to me. He quickly had my confidence. My surgery at L4-5 ended up with a messy complication, which was handled very well, and now one year after surgery I am doing just fine and have been assured that I will never have another sciatic nerve issue. Whew! Dr. Hammers is very thorough, meticulous, highly focused and pays careful attention to the smallest details. Plus he is very personable! His assistant, Jill, is also top notch. Not that I am willing anymore surgery for myself, but if I ever need neurosurgery again I would head straight to Dr. Hammers' office!

What a blessing he is to patients! My husband had major back problems-not being able to walk or stand for more than 3 minutes at a time. He had lost hope of doing the things that were important to him. After dragging our feet on looking into the option of back surgery( all the horror stories about back surgery scared us enough to never make this an option); we decided to talk to Dr. Hammers, who came highly recommended. What a success! My husband says he would choose to do the surgery again without even pausing to think about yes or no as an answer! I recommend Dr. Hammers because: he is personable and compassionate, thorough, highly skilled, doesn’t practice on you, but operates if he believes after thorough consideration that the operation will be successful, and follows up the recovery after the surgery. Definitely, make a Consultation appointment with Dr. Hammers. We still can’t believe that my husband is back to doing the things he loves to do in life!
