Almost killed me
When we found out I was pregnant with our first child, I established care with the midwife group at Community Hospital. A few days later in the middle of the night, I began having cramping and significant bleeding. I knew this wasn't normal and rang the on-call service. Dr Cortez returned my call. I explained what I was experiencing. She told me to take a bath, NSAIDs, and 'try to relax'. I asked about testing for an ectopic pregnancy and she brushed it off, saying it was 'very rare' and that it would be 'as painful as appendicitis' (which I've never had). She would not order any testing. Over the next week, I continued having pain and bleeding. I called and wrote several times but she nor any other providers seemed concerned. A week after my late-night call, I awoke in the middle of the night in the worst pain of my life and was rushed to the ER. I had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Early treatment could have saved my fallopian tube and my fertility. I'll never have children naturally.
