Dr. Seren Tokumura, MD

Dr. Tokumura has been taking care of our family through the urgent care in Hilo because we can almost never see our PCP when we try to. She has always been very respectful, patient and super good at taking care of us. We wait until she comes to town to go see her because we trust she does the right thing for us. She is our favorite doctor.

I went to urgent care a few months ago when me and my husband got sick. I told her I was super sick and I had a fever and my husband had got antibiotics from his primary. She explained a lot like I might not have a fever since I never checked my temperature and probably had a virus. She did prescribe me antibiotics in case I got worse but told me I should wait to take them and if I got better then don't take them. Well, I took the other medicine she prescribed and felt way better and me and my husband who took antibiotics got better at the same time. Except my husband had diarrhea for the next week and he said it was probably because he took the antibiotics and he wishes he saw Dr. Tokumura instead lol. Thank goodness she took time to actually listen and think about what to do and was smarter than Dr. Google lol.

We were on vacation in Hawaii when my 12 year old daughter fell on rocks and took a chunk out of her leg. As a nurse, I was going to take her straight to the ER but one of the guys on the beach who helped us told us to try the urgent care and see if Dr. Tokumura was working. Apparently she has sewn a lot of them up and is known to do a great job. We did have to wait for an hour but it was completely worth it! She was so nice, calmed my girl down, took her time and did an absolutely incredible job suturing her up. Once we got home our plastic surgeon took out the stitches and he was shocked with Dr. Tokumura's work. We showed him before and after pictures and he said he couldn't have done a better job if he had been in an operating room. He said there would have been a huge scar if she hadn't closed it like a plastic surgeon and could not believe that work came out of an urgent care! You can barely see a scar now and we are so grateful for Dr. Tokumura!

Probably the most caring and cool doctor! She explained everything, talks so I could understand, answer all my questions, no BS, and really cares. I don't usually like or trust doctors but Dr. Tokumura really changed my mind.

Dr.Tokumura is a helpful and understanding and caring doctor, i had a really nice visit, she took care of the burn on my arm. Thank you.

Dr. Tokumura was seriously the best doctor I've ever had! She took the time to explain everything in normal language and no one else did that for me before. She's super smart and super pretty and you can tell she loves what she does. Those guys are so busy but she took time with me. She also handled the entitled tourist Karens and Kens that were there causing a ruckus with composure that I would not have. We lucky to have her come from Oahu to take care of us.

I developed ear pain while on vacation in Hilo, HI. This treatment provider asked about my symptoms. I responded:Me: ear pain, and I believe I ran a fever last night--Her: Did you use a thermometer?Me: No. Her: Then you didn't have a fever. I've had a lot of women who have such magical thinking, but you're the first man. A 'fever' requires a thermometer, and you'd have to have a bacterial infection to have a fever. You don't have a fever right now.'Magical thinking?' I was stunned. I'm 70 & know when I have fever. I had taken acetaminophen (fever reduction), and she didn't ask about any other symptoms. At the end of the exam she prescribed an antibiotic (so I DID have an infection!). She told me I was a 'grown man' and could choose to use nasal antihistamines if I wanted to.I felt insulted by her words and attitude. I didn't defend myself because I needed the antibiotic. I've lectured at 3 medical schools on patient-physician communication; she obviously missed my presentations.

If I could rate 0 stars, I would. This “doctor” (if you could even call her that) is borderline psychotic/delusional. She REALLY does not like when you question her “expertise” and will lecture you to soothe her enormous ego. She was completely rude and disrespectful from the beginning of the appointment up until she just stormed out of the room and began gossiping to other staff. We overheard her saying “Just get them out of here.” She does not have a good heart and should honestly be banned from providing medical “care”. Never come here if you want to be cared for and treated with respect.

Was very rude and hostile from the beginning to me and my sick four year old son. Left the room and never came back in to treat him because she didn’t agree with that I had to say. Shame on you!

After some question and answers with Dr. Tokumura I made an informed decision to not have an exam and to go elsewhere so that I can receive more care than the urgent care facility in Hilo, where she works at can provide, What I didn’t expect was Dr. Tokumura to write lies about me in her report where she quoted something I said which I know I didn’t. To add salt to the wound, she reported that I appeared unpleasant (No duh! I’m not feeling well!), and gave a psychiatric description that I was demanding! My guess is because I made an informed decision not to let her exam me due to her lack of understanding and knowledge of my situation, she took it personal and made sure to “stick it to me” that I’m demanding so to cover her behind as to why she didn’t treat me in case something more serious happened to me. She’s unprofessional, untrustworthy, vindictive, and shouldn’t be in contact with other human beings less provide medical attention to them.

Dr. Tokomura does not like her patients to question her about her diagnosis. I questioned her and she started ranting and actually put on my chart that I have "behavioral problems." I will not go back to Hilo Urgent Care if she?s on call.

Terrible doctor. Very confrontational if you don't like what she says.

I have a chest cold. She told me to get checked for congestive heart failure! Don’t know her education but she should redo medical school.

Saw her at Urgent Care. Very rude bedside manner. My 6 year old had very sore throat and didn’t open his mouth wide enough to check it, so she roughly used a tongue depressor (said “I have to this when they don’t listen”). I explained how his fever had been through the roof for a few days, he had major aches/chills, even though flu test was negative. She said my thermometer must have not been working b/c forehead thermometers aren’t accurate. She said it must be an ear infection, and proceeded to check his ears and nose. Said they didn’t look bad but that must be sinus related so she prescribed antibiotics. I felt like it wasn’t right (I’ve had sinus infections and symptoms didn’t match) and took him back to regular doctor. They looked at his throat and instantly said it was strep (and swab confirmed). The other doc basically said she was ridiculous and that she had diagnosed him with no evidence. He changed the antibiotic b/c he said the one she gave was mixed with a laxative.
