On the top of my list.
Empathetic, authentic, sincere, extremely knowledgeable and with the best bed side manners has proven that being a doctor is more than know medicine and chemistry. You need to listen, understand, and support those who are looking to you for a word of hope, and encouragement… That’s exactly who Dr Chao is. an amazing doctor with old time values who puts the welfare of the patient first. He is one of the best. Too bad are not more doctors like him.

Lack of time spent with patient
He did not seem to really care about me as a person or have any interest in my issues. I feel it is because I am older and he seemed to brush off my case as being expected. Spent less than two minutes in the room. Did not answer questions I asked. Was overall placating me the entire time. I left feeling disappointed and insulted. Most of all upset that I waited so long to see him and was looking forward to having a discussion about my longstanding back issues and he seemed like he just wanted to get the appointment over with and did not answer questions I had. I felt rushed out of the room and that my appointment was meaningless and just another patient to chalk off the list and get to the next one.

Outstanding Doctor
Dr. Chao is an attentive, detailed, explains things in common terms and thorough in his treatment and assessment of my medical issues. He has performed 3 procedures on me - all done with care and attention (as well as from his team). I always feel cared for and know he has my best interests in mind. I think he is one of the best Orthopedic Surgeons out there. My prognosis and future outlooks are more positive with the work he has done. Very grateful for his attention to my situation and feel that he was the first of many doctors I have seen in the past that understood my situation and found positive solutions that have impacted my quality of life and future well being.

Terrible experience lacks empathy
My experience with this doctor was poor. He walked in barely greeted me. He did not examine me to determine leg weakness etc. He looked at my MRI and said 75% chance of surgery. I have a bulging disc and this was the first time I have experience severe sciatica pain. When I told my primary at the Brigham he said that was 'outrageous' to suggest surgery after just two weeks of symptoms. He said that 85% of bulging discs self resolve in 2-12 weeks and that I should try PT first then if that doesn't help then an injection. But, to suggest that off the bat was not in my best interest. When I told him I wanted to avoid surgery at all costs, he handed my a sheet of paper describing the procedure and immediately wanted to get me out of his office. Night and day experience with another spine doctor at the Baptist. Be weary of this guy. I would never let him operate on me. I don't trust him at all.

While I respect Dr. Chao's time and opinion, he spent less than 10 minutes discussing my issues with me, after I waited 90intues to speak with him. My time was of little concern, and my questions and concerns did not merit any concern for him. It's obvious he had time for someone since my appointment wait time was 90min.
