Heartfelt Hope
My husband was in the Upstate ICU and unresponsive. I sat every day by his bed, reading to him and hoping for a miracle when I suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around to see my primary care Dr., Dr Swarnkar and she said, "Is this your husband?" I barely was able to say yes when she reached her arms out to me in the warmest embrace that I have ever felt. She held me lovingly while I weeped in a kind of agony mixed with relief into her shoulder. At first, I felt embarrassed at what I had perceived as my own lack of strength, but then Dr. Swarnkar said, "I am on the palliative care team here and I am going to be here for you and your husband. Her heartfelt, compassionate hug was the healing salve I so desperately needed now. My husband was unable to breathe without the help of a ventilator. Each day he remained on that device led me down a rabbit hole of fear, wondering, would he ever return to me? Dr. Swarnkar brought us heartfelt hope and healing. We are forever grateful!
