Dr. Sumit Isharwal, MD

I recently met Dr. Isharwal at Baptist M.D. Anderson after an urgent care trip in Oct 2024 led to the discovery of a mass on my kidney. He was very kind and understanding from the beginning and had me go through a full staging work up to rule out any chance of spread in case it was cancer. Once I got past all of that testing he discussed options with me and helped me realize that surgery was going to be my best path forward. 6 weeks after our initial appt Dr. Isharwal performed the surgery that ultimately saved my life and gave me a second chance! The surgery was a robotic assisted nephrectomy and it went perfectly. Also, recovery has been great so far. I truly believe I could not have been in better hands! I had a lot of anxiety leading up to the surgery, but Dr. Isharwal kept me grounded throughout the process and focused on the outcome, which was a resounding success. I am forever grateful for him and his team at Baptist M.D. Anderson. He is the best!

I highly recommend Dr. Isharwal and the entire team at UVA. They are up to date on the latest procedures and have the skills and facilities to apply them. It turned out I needed those latest advances. I had only minor incontinence problems and never needed to wear diapers or pads. I attribute that to Dr. Isharwal's skill and technique. Dr. Isharwal worked me into his busy schedule and I am much appreciative. Looking back, I wish I had chosen UVA to begin with.

I came to Dr. Isharwal from another urologist. From the outset he was patient and thorough. We followed my prostate cancer for several months. A second biopsy revealed that it had become more aggressive. Given my father's history with metastatic prostate cancer, I opted for surgery. Dr. Isharwal and his team performed my prostatectomy. The location of my tumor, allowed him to use a Retzius sparing approach which gave me excellent bladder control early on. Sexual function is as good as before the surgery. We're doing regular PSA tests, all of which have been negative. I have complete confidence in Dr. Isharwal and his care.

I received a referral to see Dr Isharwal.. He answered All questions.. Very Patient.. knowledgeable..Went over the CT scans..biopsies..I had an obstruction in my right ureter.. Had stents in my bladder.. He saved my right kidney.. I am very thankful I was sent his way.. He is the best & I recommend him to anyone..He is a Blessing..

Great from start to finish!

I had an excellent referral for Dr. Isharwal and the referral was correct. From day one in his office he explains everything and answers all questions. He listens to my concerns and we discuss them. Using the UVA Mychart patient portal, he will respond in a timely manner and he called me from his cell phone one week after the surgery to check on me. I am almost 4 months post surgery and cancer free. He is an excellent surgeon. Thank You.

Dr. Isharwal spent lots of time before surgery explaining my condition and the treatment options. He drew pictures and diagrams to help me understand the procedure. He never rushed me, was always willing to spend the time to answer my questions.

Dr. Isharwal was awesome throughout the entire process of explaining my prostate cancer diagnosis. He explained all the pre surgery procedures clearly and was very detailed concerning the surgery to remove my prostate. Everything went extremely well with the surgery and I am feeling great! I & my family all have hearing loss & I’ve never been in a hospital. Under the circumstances it was very stressful with the pandemic in full effect I was more afraid of that than I was to lose my bladder, prostate & lymph nodes. By blessed grace of the Lord Dr Isharwal was able to remove all cancer & the lymph nodes came back negative so I’m cancer free! To all the staff & special care team for the urostomy teaching for their time & patience for myself as well as my family that was there with me. Karie Wilson you’re name should be spelled Care(y)! You kept me up with everything. Between you & Terran Sims your time is vital and information great & with the added “call of you need anything” & meaning it! Home health made a big difference. I was referred to Dr Isharwal by my local urologist for the robotic assisted prostate removal surgery. He explained everything clearly and by the end of my first visit I had my surgery scheduled,a chest x-ray, and all my pre-surgical testing. Surgery and recovery went well with Dr. Isharwal calling me several times after I got home. I would highly recommend Dr. Isharwal and the staff at UVA. When I was diagnosed with kidney cancer after a car wreck December of 2018, I told the doctor that I wanted to go to UVA because of the great work that they do. When I got the notification in January that I was going to be going to doctor Isharwal, I had no idea what a wonderful doctor I have been assigned to. When I called UVA to ask about the doctor the girl on the phone said wow you got a great doctor, he's the second-best doctor we have here at the hospital. I was very relieved to say the least. After meeting with the doctor and working with him before during and after my surgery I have been nothing more than pleased with his rapport, knowledge and his professionalism. I live in Winchester Virginia and have continued my travel to UVA in Charlottesville for year and a half after my surgery to continue seeing the doctor. It is just now after my visit last week that I am going to continue my doctor visits here in Winchester and no longer see doctor Isharwal. I highly recommend him

Dr. Isharwal treated me for an elevated PSA with a physical exam, prostate biopsy and eventually robotic radical prostatectomy. I found him to be extremely professional, courteous and attentive.
