Dr. Tamera Howell, MD

I wish I had found her years ago. Had my hysterectomy plus prolapse surgery in November 2024. I have seen at least 5 doctors before her for these problems. Not even close. Would do it again.

I love Dr Howell and her confident bedside manner! She knew exactly what I needed and got it done quickly.

I saw Dr. Howell twice for post menopausal hormone care. She never took blood tests to check my levels so I ended up on completely wrong doses, which led to intermittent bleeding. She only did pap smears, which included having me in a gown before even greeting me, not forewarning me about doing a rectal, and telling me of a more invasive procedure I would need while I was in the stirrups. The entire second visit took a whole 5 minutes and felt rushed and impersonal. Communication through the portal was nil with her and confusing with the nurse. I went 6 months without anyone telling me I could have used a good RX card to pay for the $400 a month testosterone I was prescribed. Ladies, there is better care out there.

Last week my daughter went to see Dr. Howell for her first gynecological visit, specifically for new birth control options. The birth control she was on made her feel so terrible she desperately wanted to stop taking it; especially since she had a 3 month wait to get her first appointment as a new patient. Shortly after the appointment my daughter called me crying and upset that Dr. Howell didn't do anything for her - just gave her a pamphlet and told her to come back in 4 months. During the 5 minute appointment, there was some discussion about types of birth control but everything my daughter suggested was discouraged by Dr. Howell, and then proceeded to give her a harsh lecture on condoms (as if she was a 14 yo). So my question or concern is simply - What gynecologist sends a 20 year old college girl out of their office WITHOUT birth control, and tells her to come back in 4 months?? Zero stars as one star is too generous. She would not let me speak and repeatedly interrupted me when I tried to do so. She just up and walked out mid appointment when I tried to defend myself from her attacks about me doing nothing to help myself. I did EVERYTHING she said do between appointments but she didn’t care to ask or listen. Told me she cannot help me if I won’t help myself. She refused to address the issue I was referred to her for. So unbelievably hateful, cold, and lacks any empathy and ability to connect with patients. She yelled at me when I said medical appointments cause me anxiety. She also yelled at me to walk even though I have nerve pain in my ankle and foot. She said walk anyway. Very irresponsible and horrible advice medically to do that. Worst experience I have had with a medical provider. Just awful and she could not care less. Like I said, just walked out of the room. She has the temperament of a toddler. Seems like an absolutely miserable person.

The way I felt with Dr. Howell was unimportant and made to feel my issues were not of concern. She and the nurse quite literally barged into the room before I was full undressed which felt extremely unprofessional and really bothered me, especially since I asked them to wait. I have been dealing with suspected endometriosis and the main piece of medical advice I got after explaining my symptoms was to “drink more water.” I do not think I will return for a follow up after this humiliating experience.

Doesn't listen to patient. More concerned with checking the boxes on chart and preventative tests than why the patient is there.

Dr. Howell diagnosed me with prolapse and recommended a repair using mesh. I told her I was uncomfortable given the mesh controversy, but she assured me that the mesh itself was safe and that she could do the surgery. Long story short, the mesh shrunk, hyper-elevating my bladder causing me to be completely incontinent for 3 months. When I went for my initial checkup after the surgery (I had to go home with a catheter), she removed the catheter and realized that the surgery had not gone well. I was emotional and began to tear up. She was harsh and unsympathetic to my feelings. I had her refer me to UVA, where another surgeon had to remove all the mesh, only 3 months after my initial surgery. Dr. Howell did not consider my needs, my feelings or my wishes. She was arrogant, rude, and harsh. I regularly tell people not to go to her.

I wish had read these reviews prior to seeing Dr. Howell. I agree with all of the poor reviews. She DOES NOT listen to you as a patient. I felt rushed and misheard in her office. I came with many ideas in how to treat my PCOS, none of which were received by Dr. Howell. I felt that she just wanted to put on the "bandaid" of birth control and be done with it. I soon switched over to a nurse practitioner in Christiansburg and it is like night and day.

I have been going to this office for six years and always have been treated with kindness and respect but today that changed when I saw Dr. Howell. She refused to listen to me about a prolapse and talked to me very condescendingly. She told me without even looking that she didn't think it was possible for me to have a prolapse. She continued with the exam her way instead of checking like you should for a prolapse. I had to call my primary care physician to get help!

VERY HORRIBLE DOCTOR WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND. I had an emergency dermoid cyst removal surgery with her and had to have the same exact surgery in less than a years time because she messed it up so bad. So much scar tissue that my new surgeon could barely even get to my ovary. Very rude and short and blamed me for all the problems I was having, Saying I wasn’t taking my birth control right. Again would never recommend Dr. Howell to anyone, do your research before scheduling an appointment with her.

She's very Rushy and doesn't let you talk before she starts talking. I timed my last visit of five whole minutes. She didn't seem concerned and was quick to push Birth Control. When I told her the side effects she made out like it was all in my head. I seen her three times tried to give her the benefit of the doubt. Done with that office. She's not professional at all.

Horrible. Orders tests you don't need and without telling you. Abrupt and rude office staff.

She was very rude and did not fully listen to all the issues I was having. She brushed me off, and acted as if I was drug seeking. I'm a substance abuse counselor and find that judging someone by their appearance is a horrid way to conduct business especially in the medical field.
