One to avoid
If you are looking for a doctor who will shoot down and ignore any suggestion that you may have, you have found him. Otherwise, if you would prefer a practitioner who will listen, not be condescending, and not have an ego the size of Alaska, you'd have many more to choose from. Never have I encountered a doctor unwilling to learn more about a patient's condition and share those newfound skills. My mistake was expecting more, and not heading for the door, never to return, after my first appointment.

WORTH the 45 minute drive!
Best care I’ve had in over 10 years! I have been reluctant to visit doctors since puberty (I’m 45 now). I had a trauma experience with a doctor when I was 14. I’ve also had great difficulty finding providers with knowledge about my identity and the related medical needs for the continued care necessary for me to maintain the appearance I need to be me in the world. With the retirement of a key physician, I came to Todd full of hope, and I was GRATEFUL! He is warm, friendly, and an EXPERT in the care I need. All the anxiety and fear I’ve held around both my identity and my past doctor experiences disappeared once he acknowledged me in the room. Even when I called to make an appointment, his staff welcomed me in a way that I knew I would be comfortable in this space and with these people. I’ve neglected a concern in my blood work for a couple of years, and Todd is on it already. AWESOME!

I have not been getting the health care that I have needed for many years with my current health care provider, so I decided to use my private health insurance through my current job. I showed up to the appointment with current labs and my medication list. I found the staff helpful but dealing with Dr. Todd Canon was a nightmare. I am an Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran that sustained many injuries while deployed and in garrison. I am not seeking any current benefit other than proper health care. I informed him of all my ailments that I have been experiencing. Going on no objective evidence other than a brief physical exam he was quick to say that most of my ailments were related to a psychiatric illness. "I am not calling you a liar but your vague symptoms" as he put it did not seem severe and were related to my psychiatric problems. On the first visit Dr. Canon had me all figured out. My medical history is extensive and documented and the fact that he passed this judgement without

Terrible. He's the most condescending doctor I've dealt with in a long while. The other doctors at SAMC are great, but avoid this one

Dr. Canon started out wonderful and would spend time listening and explaining things. Over the years he has become more and more short and he attitude has shifted. My last visit with him he would not listen and appeared to have diagnosed me before I arrived. My wife explained her situation, he negated her concerns for the treatment. I referred a friend to Dr. Canon who is transgender and my friend told me when he expressed discomfort for the language used the Dr. was unapologetic and cynical.

I recently went to Dr. Todd Canon at the South Austin Medical Clinic, and I am now a total fan. He was extremely supportive of and knowledgeable about my vegan diet, and he also helped me decide which vaccines to get for my upcoming trip to Costa Rica. Above all, he was kind, patient, and easy to talk to. I couldn't ask for more from a primary care doctor.

I would recommend Dr. Todd Canon to any one. Why? Dr. Canon studies the situations carefully before recommending treatment. He is a good listener. If there is any question on diagnosis, he will research until he has a clear answer. If he can't take care of it, he will send you to someone who can. He is a very open doctor, one feels like you can share anything with him that deals with your illness. He is very trustworthy and compassionate.
