I took my 13 year old daughter for a routine physical to play sports in the fall. I expected the typical height, weight, heart, ears, nose throat checks. As well as questions about what she eats, how active she is and if she is sexually active or has experienced any abuse. I was not expecting her to be body shamed. The conversation that occurred while I was out of the room included comments like, "You aren't obese yet...." and "Where do you feel you've gained weight?.." My daughter is healthy, within a normal weight range and has a BMI of 22 (let's not even talk about the fallacy of BMI). I am extremely disappointed in this provider and the level of misinformation about weight and body composition. My daughter has struggled with body image issues for years, but this provider wouldn't know that because she never asked. She did however, contribute to her body dysmorphia and risk for future disordered eating. We will not be returning.
