I’m upset that Claire did not inform me that the additional lab work/testing she recommended was not part of the procedure I was there for (Pap smear), but was additional lab work at an additional cost. Insurance covered most but not all of it. When I go to the dentist for a routine cleaning, they recommend the additional fluoride treatment and inform me it will be at an additional cost and allow me to make an informed decision. Because trusted Claire I agreed to these additional tests in Claire’s office. I am now responsible for part of the cost. Any communication as simple as, “these tests will be added to your bill” or “you can check to ensure your insurance will cover these tests” would have been appreciated. Trust is important to me in these vulnerable visits and especially when it comes to family planning. Because of this experience and lapse in trust I will sadly not be returning to Claire as my provider and not seeking midwifery from her when the time comes.
